Artist-in-residence.
A. Central Valley painting by David Hines; Central Valley is oil on linen painting that
was executed in 2000 and measures 27” x 50”. In an email to the curator, Mr. Hines
provides the following information about the work: The painting was done from
photos taken on a county road in Tulare County, just north and east of the town of
Tulare, CA, in the Central Valley of California. Tulare is on state highway 99, the
major highway running through the fertile Central Valley from Bakersfield to
Sacramento.
B. Mr. Hines states “I have done a lot of paintings in this area, both plein air and from
photos. In this painting, I was trying to reduce the composition to the typical bare
minimal agricultural environment that most characterizes this part of the central
valley, which I have been drawn to (and still am!) over the past 20 years or so
working there. I worked rather energetically on the roadside of this painting, freely
putting in the dirt and vegetation with a palette knife as much as with a brush, an
unusual practice with me. I believe I did the roadside from another photo from
another site, if I remember. The sky of course is a typical bright dry summer
California sky.”

recommended acquisition of the aforementioned works. A justification why each work
would enhance the RMAC’s collection was provided.
