Printed and posted: October 12, 2016  DRAFT DOCUMENT MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Monday, September 19, 2016 REGULAR MEETING AT 4:00p.m. CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order by Chairwoman Krantz at 4:00p.m. ROLL CALL The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Peggy Krantz, Cymantha Liakos, Jessica Parham, DeAngela Velasquez, Lorie Mitteer, Bill Siders, Priscilla Ornelas, Donovan Fulkerson, Nanette Schumacher, Jessica Ellis and Jamie Barnes being present. A quorum was established. Members absent: Tabitha Denny Staff present: Laurie Rufe, Interim Director; Amanda Nicholson, Curator of Education, Cindy Torrez, Executive Director, RMAC Foundation. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Liakos motioned to approve the agenda as presented. Member Parham seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Member Parham motioned to approve the minutes of the June 2016 Board of Trustees meeting. Member Liakos seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed. NEW BUSINESS Member Barnes pointed out that the link was currently not working for signing up for classes. In addition, it was brought up that there are two Instagram accounts for the Roswell Museum and Art Center. RMAC has been integrated into the new city website, and it still maintains its own domain name: www.roswellmuseum.org. CHAIR’S REMARKS Chairwoman Krantz remarked that Roswell Railway at the Spring River Zoo will be having a Christmas event and it will begin at the end of November and run through Christmas; she inquired about whether or not the museum would like to get involved either through a display or hands-on booth and that there was some interest in incorporating Goddard and/or rockets in the themed events. Chairwoman Krantz also remarked on the 2nd Saturday’s low attendance for August; she and Interim Director Rufe asked that the numbers provided in the membership/attendance report include comparisons from 2015 to 2016. MEMBERSHIP AND ATTENDANCE REPORTS: As Colette Speer did not attend the meeting, Amanda Nicholson provided the report to Director Rufe, who conveyed the information in this month’s report. DIRECTORS REPORT Interim Director Rufe updated the Board Members on the Director Search and announced that Caroline Brooks has officially accepted the Director’s position. She summarized the search; there were 36 applicants. Caroline and Kaia Landon were brought in for onsite interviews. Caroline starts November 4th. Laureta Huit has taken a position in High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. Nick Frederick will be promoted to Registrar. Brandon Strange will be promoted to Preparator. Director Rufe also mentioned that the Planetarium Digital Conversion project was now underway. $37,000 from the city has already been received. And the same amount will be received from the city in the next fiscal year. There has been a gift of $100,000 from Don and Sally Anderson. Director Rufe reminded all that the roof and bridge construction continue, with the bridge expected to be completed by October 1. The roof is expected to be finished within a month. Finally, Director Rufe said that the museum would need help with Block Party. In terms of other new activities, the New Mexico Air and Space Museum is expected to be at RMAC on September 28th, and Bill Siders has been involved in that project, and The NMMI 125th Anniversary show now on view has been curated by Sara Woodbury. Upcoming, looking ahead, the Board tour and orientation for new members is scheduled for October 3. Foundation Report RMAC Foundation Executive Director Torrez expressed that the foundation will be looking for $5,000 corporate sponsorships/grants and will be seeking at least ten of them. In October, the foundation will be launching a seat campaign; $500 will sponsor a seat in the Planetarium and 100 seats will be available. Executive Director Torrez added that the foundation will be looking into funding for the Wyeth/Hurd exhibition and RMAC’s 80th Anniversary. Interim Director Rufe added that the Pennsylvania Impressionist works will be held in Founders Gallery while the Hurd/Wyeth works are at the James A. Michener Museum. Respectfully Submitted DRAFT DOCUMENT Colette Speer, Membership and Events Coordinator RMAC ROSWELL MUSEUM AND ART CENTER Director’s Report to the RMAC Board of Trustees October 17, 2016 Board Meeting Submitted by: Laurie Rufe, Interim Executive Director 1. Staff Registrar and Preparator Positions Registrar Laureta Huit resigned to take a job at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. Preparator Nick Frederick was promoted to the Registrar position and Security Officer Brandon Strange was promoted to the Preparator position. Both are skilled, dependable, and can take a leadership role in their respective positions. Nick has a degree in Fine Art-Sculpture and Brandon has a degree in History. 2. Art Block Party and Chalk Art Festival The Art Block Party and Chalk Art Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 22. Amanda Nicholson, Curator of Education, and Colette Speer, Membership and Events Coordinator, have taken the lead as a planning team. Post card invitations, banners, radio and newspaper advertising are completed. Volunteers, booths, food, electricity, logistics, and all activities are coordinated and ready to go. 3. Infrastructure The bridge renovation and roof replacement projects continue, but are nearly complete. 4. National Air and Space Museum The Museum was recently visited by a film crew from the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. featuring Marty Kelsey, host of “STEM in 30,” an interactive classroom program consisting of 30-minute live webcasts that engage middle school students in STEM topics. Docent Bill Siders was filmed in the Goddard Workshop, explaining Robert Goddard’s liquid fuel rocket technology, and Bob Armstrong was filmed at the Eden Valley launch site that is located on his ranch. Portions of the filming will be aired later in October on the STEM in 30 website, NASA TV, and YouTube.
