CALL TO ORDER Chair Cymantha Liakos called the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:04 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Cymantha Liakos, Donovan Fulkerson, Bill Siders, Peggy Krantz, Jamie Barnes, Lorrina Segovia, Kay Cargill Jenkins and Valli West being present. A quorum was established with members Jessica Parham, Priscilla Ornelas and Anne Baker being absent. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director; Wendy Cook, Communications and Events Coordinator; Cindy Torrez, Executive Director RMAC Foundation and Barry Foster, City Council Liaison. Community members present: Jim Ball. C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Segovia motioned to approve the agenda. Member Fulkerson seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Ornelas, Parham and Baker being absent. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Member Krantz motioned to approve the minutes for the February 25, 2019, board meeting. Member Siders seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Ornelas, Parham and Baker being absent. E. NEW BOARD MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS New members Kay Cargill Jenkins and Valli West gave brief introductions. F. DISCUSSION AND CONSIDER APPROVAL OF COLLECTIONS WORKING GROUP Director Brooks discussed the desire of new Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Aubrey Hobart, to create a Collections working group. The purpose of the group would be to preview potential acquisitions before bringing them to the board as well as focus on what types of works are appropriate for the RMAC mission. Member Siders moved to approve the creation of a collections working group. Member Barnes seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Ornelas, Parham and Baker being absent. Members Liakos, West and Jenkins agreed to be a part of the working group. G. MEMBERSHIP/ATTENDANCE REPORT Director Brooks shared the February membership and attendance report. H. DIRECTOR’S REPORT 1. Women’s History Month Films Recap The two films presented as part of Women’s History Month in March, Girl Rising and Soufra, brought in 54 and 45 people respectively. Congratulations to Wendy Cook for her stellar efforts in organizing the inspirational events and thanks to the RMAC Foundation and Yasine Armstrong for sponsorship support. Another film series will take place in the fall. 2. Storm Damage Storm damage was minimal at the museum during the March 13th wind event. Preliminary assessment presented some torn banners, a damaged sign and a cracked window in the ceramics studio. The roof is also being inspected. The museum canceled planetarium shows on Tuesday night due to a potential storm and Wednesday due to the power outage. The museum was closed on Wednesday from 1:00pm-5:00 pm due to the power outage. 3. April Brown Bag Talk: Roswell Film Festival April’s talk will take place on April 5 and will be given by Donovan Fulkerson about the Roswell Film Festival, which honors international feature and short films of all genres during the April festival through screenings, panel discussions and special events. 4. Volunteers Needed Plans are nearing completion for pARTy After Hours on April 12 and Family After Hours on May 9. Volunteers are still needed to assist at the events. 5. Relighting Completed The Xcel Energy relighting project has been completed. An Advertorial for KOBR’s Good Day New Mexico will be filmed on March 19 to promote the project. 6. Civic Rec There has been a delay in the start of the new online registration system for classes and memberships due to a programming and ecommerce issue. The system should be ready by April 1. 7. Potential Lunar Landing Anniversary Celebration Staff are looking to partner with the Roswell Astronomy Club to present a celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the Lunar Landing on Saturday, July 20th. Ideas include an outdoor film, hands-on activities and moon gazing. 8. Renovation Update Director Brooks and two RMAC Foundation Representatives, Riley Armstrong and Cindy Torrez, met with the City Manager, the Facilities Manager and City Councilor Barry Foster at the end of February to discuss the potential renovation. 9. Logo Discussion Director Brooks met with the City Manager and Director of Public Affairs regarding the City’s rebranding and the direction for the museum’s logo. They did not reach a conclusion and the discussion is ongoing. O. RMAC FOUNDATION REPORT Executive Director Torrez shared the success of the February 23rd Mystery at the Museum fundraiser. The event was sold out and was the highest grossing mystery event to date. P. CHAIR’S REMARKS AND BOARD ANNOUNCMENTS None Q. PUBLIC COMMENT Jim Ball requested time to address the group in regards to the current museum renovation proposal. He expressed concern that the conceptual designs were too contemporary and provided images of a more Southwest aesthetic. Mr. Ball suggested the creation of a long-term master plan to create a Southwest look throughout the facility. R. ADJOURN Member Siders motioned to adjourn. Member Segovia seconded. The meeting adjourned at 4:57 p.m. Director’s Report to the RMAC Board of Trustees April 15, 2019 Board Meeting Submitted by: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director 1. Virtue of Ownership The museum opened a traveling panel exhibition organized by the African American Museum and Cultural Center at the museum on Sunday, April 7 that explores African American homesteading in New Mexico. The opening included a panel discussion with descendants from Blackdom and a reception and musical performance by the Rodney Bowe Trio. The event had approximately 60 attendees and many offered requests for similar events to be offered at the museum in the future. A second panel discussion on the topic of Jim Crow laws will be scheduled in the late summer. The exhibition continues through November 24. Recognition goes to Aubrey Hobart for partnering with the African American Museum and Cultural Center, who lent the panels for the exhibition and organized the panel discussion. 2. Renovation Update RMAC Foundation President Chelsea Green, Councilor Caleb Grant, Facilities Manager Kevin Dillon, and Councilor Barry Foster met for a walkthrough and discussion of the potential Museum renovation. A recommendation was made to request capital monies for the schematic and engineering phase of the project. 3. pARTY After Hours Review PARTY After Hours took place on Friday, April 12 with a theme of honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. Activities included a mix of Moon-inspired activities including Planetarium shows, Space Bingo, Constellation Art, and a Moon photo booth. The event also featured a cash bar presented by Red Door Brewing Company of Albuquerque, pizza and treats from Eli‘s Bistro & Bakery, music from Roswell’s Five Star DJ, prize drawings and discounted memberships. The event was generously supported by the RMAC Foundation and is aimed at expanding access to the Museum and presenting art and science as an integral part of our lives. Thanks to Wendy Cook for organizing the event and to the event’s business partners, volunteers and prize drawing donors. 4. Brown Bag Talks Donovan Fulkerson gave a well-attended talk on the Roswell Film Festival’s goals and origins and presented the trailer for this year’s event at April’s Talk. In May, the Museum will be hosting Dr. James Córdova who is a professor of art history at CU Boulder and an award-winning sculptor and painter. Dr. Córdova’s studies in the field of Colonial Latin American art have helped inform his production of traditional santos (saint) figures, while his artistic sensibilities may explain the creativity of his scholarly  works. This Brown Bag talk will be a rare opportunity to hear a master speak about the intersection of his professional lives, and is not to be missed! 5. Family After Hours The Museum is partnering with RISD’s Arts Connect Program to present a free night of family-friendly, New Mexico-themed art activities on Thursday, May 9 from 5-8 pm at the Museum. Family After Hours aims to encourage parents to partner with their children in the arts, while building memorable, shared experiences. Additional funding for the event is provided by the RMAC Foundation. Volunteer opportunities are still available.
