CALL TO ORDER Vice-Chair Bill Siders called the meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:03 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Donovan Fulkerson, Bill Siders, Peggy Krantz, Priscilla Ornelas, Jessica Parham, Jamie Barnes, Anne Baker, and Lorrina Segovia being present. A quorum was established with members Cymantha Liakos, Valli West and Kay Cargill Jenkins being absent. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director; Wendy Cook, Communications and Events Coordinator; Aubrey Hobart, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Amberly Meli, Registrar, and Cindy Torrez, Executive Director RMAC Foundation. Community members present: none. C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Parham motioned to approve the agenda. Member Segovia seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Cargill Jenkins, Liakos and West being absent. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Member Krantz motioned to approve the minutes for the August 19, 2019, board meeting. Member Parham seconded. DISCUSS AND CONSIDER APPROVAL OF HOFFMAN BEQUEST DONATION In 2011, the Museum received 8 ceramic vessels of native southwest origin through a bequest by William Hoffman. No provenance documentation was provided which raised some potential NAGPRA compliance issues, so they were never accessioned into the collection. In 2019, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Aubrey Hobart contacted Dr. Cynthia Bettison, an expert on ancient regional pottery and the Director of the Western New Mexico University Museum (WNMU), to further identify the objects and consult on next steps. Ultimately, given the WNMU Museum’s focus on regional Native American ceramics and Dr. Bettison’s expertise, Ms. Hobart recommended a transfer of ownership to WNMU where the objects would be displayed more frequently, more thoroughly interpreted, and be a part of a larger, more suitable collection of similar vessels. Director Brooks added that the City Attorney is looking into how and whether the objects can be transferred, and any decision/findings made by he or other City officials may override the decision of the Board of Trustees. F. MEMBERSHIP/ATTENDANCE REPORT Director Brooks reviewed the August membership and attendance report. G. DIRECTORS REPORT Director’s Report to the RMAC Board of Trustees September 16, 2019 Board Meeting Submitted by: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director 1. Fire Alarm System Updates Updates to the fire alarm system will continue through the next several months with an estimated completion by the end of November. 2. Christopher Baldwin A Gratton workshop will take place on September 28-29 on the topic “Creating Comics About Your Life” led by Christopher Baldwin. Gratton Workshops are open to paying students and those with a financial need. We ask that students pay what they can afford up to the suggested donation of $125. Supplies are included with fee. Workshops are open to adults of all experience levels. To register, please contact Tiffany at 575-500-0363 or t.melancon@roswell-nm.gov. 3. Bottle Caps Please collect plastic bottle caps and lids to contribute to a recycled art mural depicting Capitan Mountain that will be assembled during the science and art festival. They need to be clean and may be dropped off until October 7 to the Museum. 4. Science and Art Festival The second annual science and art festival will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Roswell Convention Center. Recent additions to the festival is the Department of Cultural Affairs Wheels of Wonder mobile museum with an exhibit showcasing the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the Roswell Fire Department with its Fire Obstacle Course, and two sessions of Family Yoga with Michelle Matthews. Volunteer opportunities are available. 5. August Event Follow-Up pARTy After Hours took place on Friday, August 23 from 6 to 9 pm with an attendance of 140. Family After Hours was presented on August 29 from 5 to 8 pm in partnership with RISD’s Arts Connect Program with an attendance of 436. The theme for the pARTy was “Swing Into the 40s” based on the Decades: The 1930s and 1940s exhibition. The theme for the family night was “Fields of Color” in connection with the Coloring Inside the Lines exhibition. Both were supported by the RMAC Foundation. 6. Virtue of Ownership Panel We hosted the second of two panel discussions connected to The Virtue of Ownership exhibition on September 7. The in-person attendance was not as high as expected, however there were 56 viewers online and the video is available on Facebook. The topic was school segregation, its effects on social interactions in the community, and how segregated schools interacted with other school communities. The event was organized by the African American Museum and Cultural Center. 7. Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions Decades: The 1930s and 1940s opened on August 23. The exhibition, which showcases artwork from the permanent collection created in those decades, is part of a series that will continue throughout the next couple of years and will examine some of the influences that inspired artwork of those eras.  The next Artist-in-Residence exhibition will be for Erica Bailey and opens on September 20 with a lecture and reception from 5:30-7pm. Her exquisitely crafted video and diorama installations will examine humanities’ past and future. On October 25 from 5-7 pm, an exhibition by ceramic/mixed media artist Sharbani Das Gupta title In/Site will open with a reception. She uses her work to draw attention to the not-so-hidden, but often disregarded, links between ourselves and the worlds we inhabit and impact. On November 8 from 5-7 pm, the museum will open A Line in the Sand: Wildlife of the Borderlands, and exhibition co-curated by biologists Tracy Diver and Alexis Harrison and organized by Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Aubrey Hobart. The exhibition explores the stories of animals living along the border, from the observations of early explorers to contemporary artistic representations of these same species. This event is part of the Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande regional collaboration organized by 516 Arts in Albuquerque. For more information visit 516arts.org. H. RMAC FOUNDATION REPORT RMAC Foundation Director Torrez shared that the Foundation applied for two local grants to support the October 12th Science and Art Festival, one was denied and a second is pending approval. She is currently preparing the fall appeal letter and the foundation has formed a membership committee to explore how they may help the museum drive new membership. Director Torrez also stated that museum renovation support is on hold until city officials determine project priority. I. CHAIR’S REMARKS AND BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS None J. PUBLIC COMMENT None K. The meeting adjourned at 4:43 p.m. Director’s Report to the RMAC Board of Trustees October 17, 2019 Board Meeting Submitted by: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director 1. Science and Art Festival The 2nd annual Roswell Science and Art Festival was held on Saturday, October 12 at the Roswell Convention Center. The event included a wide variety of activities to accommodate the many interests and ages of the more than 1700 attendees. Kevin Delaney from Street Science and The Tonight Show was the headliner. New Mexico Military Institute provided many of the messier (=fun) hands-on activities in what was called the Make Lab. Explora, the library, and museum presented a new, popular Tinker Tots pre-K area. Keep Roswell Beautiful hosted a recycled bottlecap mural with the museum. The zoo, astronomy club, NMSU, and regional state and federal agencies provided demonstrations. Middle school students participated in a Mars colony design challenge, and local artists hosted a return of the chalk drawing competition. Thanks to those who came and/or were able to volunteer. Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 and planning meetings will begin in January for those who are interested. Xcel Energy provided a grant contribution toward the event. A brief presentation ceremony will be held at the Museum on Wednesday, October 23 at 10 am. 2. Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions The Donald B. Anderson Gallery has been deinstalled and Sharbani Das Gupta is on site setting up for her upcoming exhibition which opens on Friday, October 25 from 5-7 pm. Titled In/Sight, she uses her work to draw attention to the not-so-hidden, but often disregarded, links between ourselves and the worlds we inhabit and impact. Be sure to mark your calendar for A Line in the Sand: Wildlife of the Borderlands, which opens on November 8 from 5-7 pm.
