INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS H. Strategic Planning Progress Update The strategic planning committee has had three workshops. Through these workshops the group narrowed down to six goals. Through these goals the group mapped out the goals. The group will meet again in December to review the strategic planning goals and what the tasks are for each goal. January 2023 is the goal for a rough draft to be presented to the Board of Trustees. I. Museum Fee Review Update Director Brooks explained in the New Year, City Council has requested to go over the museum revenue. J. Review of BOT Terms Expiring in 2023 and Appointment Process Director Brooks explained six of the Board of Trustees positions terms are expiring on March 31, 2023. The applications for Board of Trustees positions will open January 2023. For people who are interested in the being part of the board, contact Director Brooks for more information regarding the application. K. Museum Staffing Shortage Update Director Brooks noted the museum Public Programming Position and the Assistant Registrar continues to be frozen. The RMAC Foundation has been gracious to fund a temporary part-time position for the Public Programming Positions. As the museum continues to be short staffed, going into the New Year, the staff will reevaluate the 2023 programs and make adjustments as needed. Director Brooks further explained in January 2023 there may be an opportunity to readjust the budget. L. Director’s Report Director Brooks noted visitation in October was higher than the past few years. The exhibition “Future Shock” closed on October 30th. The museum has been preparing for the RMAC Foundation fundraiser Holiday Artisan Market. To please to a yard sign, to support the museum. On December 3 the market will have a private opening, with live music and silent auction. The RiAR exhibition “Molting/Mending,” featuring artist Wen Liu, opened and will be closing mid-January. The new exhibition “ShapeShift: Abstracted Geometric Forms” has opened and showcases works from the museum permeate collection. Director Brooks informed the board the first quarterly newsletter has been sent to all members. M. RMAC Foundation Report RMAC Foundation Director Cindy Torrez announced the foundation is looking for new members for 2023. N. Chair’s Remarks and Board Announcements No comments. O. Joan Watts, One-2, 2008, Oil on Canvas, 24x24” (acquired in 2008 from Charlotte Jackson Fine Art) Justification: This gift of 15-17 works by 8 artists is an excellent compliment to work by 4 of these artists already in the Roswell Museum’s collection and valuable additions by 4 artists not currently represented in the museum’s collection. 10 Mala Breuer grew up attending classes in painting and drawing from a young age at the California College of Arts and Crafts. After high school she attended the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1984 she moved to northern New Mexico, a landscape that influenced Breuer’s use of color, light, and more minimal compositions. Breuer was a Roswell Artist-in-Residence in 1990. Her work is included in the public collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, NM; the Albuquerque Museum; the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM; FIAC in Paris, France; Capital Group in Los Angeles, CA; and the Laura Carpenter Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. This gift of two works by Breuer is an important addition to the Roswell Museum’s collection of a noted New Mexico-based artist not currently represented in the museum’s collection. Martin Horowitz was born in Long Island, New York in 1949 and passed away in 2020. His academic credentials include a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York City awarded in 1970. Horowitz resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico for an extensive number of years where he collaborated with Lou Tilmont in founding the Gold Leaf Framemakers. Horowitz’s works have been widely exhibited, including at Linda Durham Contemporary Art and the New Mexico Museum of Art, among other venues. This gift of one work by Horowitz is an excellent compliment to the one tile series work by this artist that is already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. Lucy Maki lives and works in Albuquerque. She holds an MFA, with distinction, from the University of New Mexico. Her art ranges in scale from large, shaped paintings to miniature constructions and encompasses a variety of processes, including poured paint, metal and wood assemblage, and collage. Maki’s artworks are in the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History; and the University of New Mexico Fine Art Museum, as well as, many distinguished private collections. Her art has been written about in Art News; featured in New American Painting (#18 and #36), and appeared in many publications in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. This gift of one to three works (the donor asked us to rank the three works by preference as the Roswell Museum will receive at least one) by Maki is an important addition to the Roswell Museum’s collection of a noted New Mexico-based artist not currently represented in the museum’s collection. 11 Dana Newmann was born in Prairie City, Illinois. She attended California College of Arts and Crafts before graduating with a BFA from of Mills College. She has often made work that rescues and re-formalizes the fragile remains of the American record. Newmann’s work, the materials themselves dictate the individual compositions; in recent years she has made use of distressed papers, snapshots, ivory piano keys, thorns, and found shopping lists. Her work is in the permanent collections of The New Mexico Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the New Mexico Capitol Art Foundation; and in El Archivero, Mexico City, as well as in private collections throughout the United States. This gift of three works by Newmann is an important addition to the Roswell Museum’s collection of a noted New Mexico-based artist not currently represented in the museum’s collection. Eugene Newmann was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in 1936. A self-taught artist, Newmann grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia and New York City and received his bachelor’s degree in 1957 from the University of Chicago. Newmann moved to New Mexico in 1972 where he became very active in the Santa Fe art scene. This artist is best known for a painting style blurring the lines between abstract and figurative subject matter. Newmann’s works have been widely exhibited, including at Linda Durham Contemporary Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, among other venues. In 2008, Newmann received a New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. This gift of three works by Newmann is an excellent compliment to the four drawings, three monotype prints, and two oil paintings by this artist that are already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. Jeremy Thomas, born 1973 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He received his BFA from the College of Santa Fe. Thomas began sculpting in stone but, while exploring how to forge his own chisel, he became interested working with metal. In 2003, Thomas accidentally discovered the unique technique to create his “inflatables.” In this process, sheets of steel are cut into geometric forms that are welded together, bent, formed, and welded again. The forms are then heated in a forge to over 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit until they become malleable. The forms are then removed from the forge and quickly inflated with pressurized air which fills and expands the supple steel into the desired shape. This process creates intriguing contrasts, with the angular, rigid steel becoming organic, fluid, and even delicate. Thomas then colors the sculptures with bright pigments, but to further the intrigue of contrasts, he creates a rusty, velvety suede patina on an uncolored surface. Thomas’ pieces have been shown at Site Santa Fe; the New Mexico Museum of Art; Rocket Gallery, London; Charlotte Jackson Fine Art in Santa Fe; and the Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe to name a few. This gift of two works by Thomas is an important addition to the Roswell Museum’s collection of a noted New Mexico-based artist not currently represented in the museum’s collection. 12 Alex Traube was born in New York City and currently lives in Santa Fe. He received a BA from American University in 1968 and completed an MA in Photography at Ohio University in 1970. In the fall of 1971, Traube joined the Center for Photographic Studies, Louisville, as Associate Director. Traube moved to Santa Fe in 1974 to concentrate on his own creative work. The 1970s and 1980s were a time of intense creative work, as well as adjunct teaching at Santa Fe Preparatory School, Santa Fe Community College, and the University of New Mexico. In 1991, Traube left Santa Fe to study digital photography. He entered a Master of Design program at Chicago’s Institute of Design, completing the degree in 1993. He was awarded an Illinois Arts Council Grant in 1994 and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1994–1995. Traube returned to New Mexico in 1995 and did consulting work for the New Mexico Museum of Art and New Mexico Arts, the state’s art agency. Traube’s photographs have been shown in Cronin Gallery, Houston; Robert Freidus Gallery, New York; and Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections including Albuquerque Museum; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Cincinnati Art Museum; Los Angeles County Museum; Musée des beaux-arts du Canada; New Mexico Museum of Art; and Smithsonian: National Portrait Gallery to name a few. This gift of two works by Traube is an excellent compliment to the one photograph by this artist that is already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. Joan Watts’ career as a painter includes multiple materials, forms, and processes — yet she has maintained a remarkably consistent aesthetic vision for over 60 years of work. Often compared to other Minimalist painters, her elegant paintings are perhaps better understood from the perspective of her meditation practice and her investigation of the ideals of contemplation and reflection. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected world-wide. Watts is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This gift of one work by Watts is an excellent compliment to the one oil painting by this artist that is already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. Given the Roswell Museum’s collection priority of supporting the arts of the Southwest, this is a strong addition to the collection by Mala Breuer, Lucy Maki, Dana Newmann, and Jeremy Thomas.
