Richardson Ave. Roswell, NM 88201 DRAFT DOCUMENT REGULAR MEETING AT 4:00 p.m. Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Sections 10-15-1 through 10-15-4, NMSA 1978 and Resolution 23-01. For the Record: Meeting is being streamed live for the public through GoToMeeting. There was no public on GoTo Meeting. A. CALL TO ORDER Board Vice Chair West called the meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:03 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Lindsay Mayo Fincher, Valli West, Kay Cargill Jenkins, Lorrina Segovia, Jane Avery Gray, Kyle Bayless, Kate Huebner, Nina Leacock and Anne Baker being present. A quorum was established with members, Elisa Begueria, and Tim Hartwick being absent. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director, Jessica Parham, Educator, Aaron Wilder, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions & Cloe Medrano, Registrar. Community members present: Cindy Torrez, Director RMAC Foundation ACTION ITEMS C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Banker motioned to approve the agenda. Member Jenkins was the second. INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS F. Introduction of New Board Members Director Brooks introduced and welcomed the new board members, Jane Avery Gray, Nina Leacock and Lindsay Mayo Fincher. G. Annual Meeting Report by Staff The museum staff, Brooks, Wilder, and Parham, discussed the museum's last year's occurrences. Brooks discussed Admissions, and current projects which includes store move, lobby update, new flooring, exterior signage, and family interactive gallery. The museum is final stages of the master plan and the strategic plan for 2023-2027. Parham reviewed the current education programming the museum offers such as, second Saturday, Family After Hour, ceramic class and the Gratton workshops. Wilder presented new exhibitions the museum has displayed since July of 2022 which included Roswell Artists-in-Residence, Future Shock: (Re) Visions of Tomorrow, Roy De Forest: Irreverent Magic, Fritz Scholder: Focus on the Figure, and Neat, Meticulous & Luminous: Remembering Agnes Tate. He further discussed upcoming exhibitions. The museum accepted 11 donations with the approval of the Board of Trustees. The museums Operations Manager Amber Smith received the City’s Mission Pillar Award for November 2022. The award recognizes one City employee per month whose exemplary work exhibits the City’s core values of accountability, communication, excellence, integrity, and/or teamwork. Renovation Status Update Director Brooks updated the board members about the flooring timeline. Huitt Zollars is finalizing bid documents for flooring and exterior signage projects for the Museum. The project will update and repair flooring in many of the public spaces to improve air quality, accessibility, maintenance, and appearance. The project is estimated to require 5 months to complete, during which it is anticipated that portions of the museum will be under construction, while other areas remain open. I. Institutional Plan Status Update Director Brooks informed the board she will bring the new Strategic Plan for approval in the next couple of months. J. Officer Election Reminder Director Brooks reminded board members at the May meeting an election for Chair and Vice Chair will occur. K. Registrar Report on Advocacy Day and National Archives Grant Project Registrar Medrano recapped attending the American Alliance of Museums Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, in February. While there, she attended Congressional meetings on Capitol Hill and met with representatives, including Melanie Stansbury, Gabe Vasquez, Teresa Leger Fernandez, Ben Ray Luján, and Martin Trevor Heinrich’s staff. As a group, AAM is advocating in support of securing $65.5 million for FY2024 funding for the Office of Museum Services (OMS) within the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). AAM is also advocating for the Support Charitable Giving Incentives Bill, which allows for increasing tax deductions for charitable donations such as artwork. L. Director’s Report Director Brooks noted the museum Public Programming Position has been un-frozen and will open July 1st. The Assistant Registrar position continues to be frozen. An HVAC unit is in need of replacement in the Museum’s auditorium. A unit is on order for the planetarium. The April to June quarterly printed newsletter was distributed the first week of April to Museum Members. M. RMAC Foundation Report RMAC Foundation Director Cindy Torrez announced four new member joined in February. The 2023 fundraiser will be September 16th, it will be a smaller event. The meeting adjourned at 6:03 p.m. Board of Trustees Meeting 5/15/2023 Acquisition Approval: Supplemental Gift of Ray and Barbara Graham to Board Approval on 3/20/2023 Artwork Donation Details & Justification: This gift of 2 additional artworks by Jerry West is an excellent complement to work by this artist already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 1. Jerry West, February Snow Melt with La Luz Pot, 2007, Watercolor on Postcard, 4x5.75” 2. Jerry West, A Place Called Pottery, 1972, Etching, 8x9.75”, Edition 2/25 Jerry West was raised with a large, wonderful family in Santa Fe and the surrounding mountains and prairie worlds. After years of schooling—grade, junior-high, high school, college, graduate school, military, park service—West returned to Santa Fe to teach. He taught for ten years history and biology. Though West had drawn and done art since childhood, he began art studies with Elmer Schooley at Highland University in 1964. By 1970, West had earned an art degree and had a graduate show. He also quit teaching in Santa Fe and began his “art career.” West was Roswell Artist-in-Residence in 2012.
