Richardson Ave. Roswell, NM 88201 DRAFT DOCUMENT REGULAR MEETING AT 4:00 p.m. Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Sections 10-15-1 through 10-15-4, NMSA 1978 and Resolution 24-23. For the Record: Meeting is being streamed live for the public through GoToMeeting. There was no public on GoTo Meeting. A. CALL TO ORDER Board Chair West called the meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:01 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members, Valli West, Anne Baker, Tim Hartwick, Kay Cargill Jenkins, Christy Murphy, Lorrina Segovia, Nina Leacock, and Lindsay Mayo Fincher present. A quorum was established with members Elisa Begueria and Jane Avery Gray being absent. City Council members present: The museum has not been appointed a city council liaison with the new council members. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Director, Jessica Parham, Educator, and Amber Smith, Operation Manager Community members present: Cindy Torrez, RMAC Foundation ACTION ITEMS C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Baker motioned to approve the agenda. Member Hartwick was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 8-0, with members Begueria and Gray being absent. D. Presentation of Discussion Topics by Nina Leacock Member Leacock discussed creating a membership group. F. Renovation Progress Update Director Brooks informed the board that the museum’s new front desk and store area electrical is currently being installed and we are waiting to hear the ETA on the glass shipment. G. Staff Update Director Brooks informed the board the Museum Board has had three recent departures. The summer intern Alyssa Smith completed a ten-week collections internship. Jenna Gelinas resigned from the planetarium assistant position to pursue a career in music production in Chicago. Guest Service Associate Ramona Anderson resigned from her position and is pursuing paralegal work. H. Governance Working Group Report The governance working group will follow up on potential board candidates I. Director’s Report Director Brooks informed the board the Museum Board exhibition Khosh min Lakha opens on Friday, August 30, with a gallery talk and reception. It will be artist Esther Elia’s first solo museum exhibition since receiving her MFA degree from the University of New Mexico in 2023.The Museum will be joining Roswell’s six other local museums for a collaborative Museum Day event on Saturday, September 14. Each museum will be free and will present different activities including art-making, tours and a flight simulator. The artist application deadline is September 6 to be considered for the Holiday Artisan Market. The Market is a juried art show, sale and fundraiser held at the Roswell Museum, representing up to 40 artists in all media from around the region. J. RMAC Foundation Report Cindy Torrez informed the board the foundation will start meeting again in September and planning will start on the Holiday Artisan Market. K. The meeting adjourned at 5:11 p.m. Board of Trustees Meeting 9/16/2024 Acquisition Approval: Gift of Martie Zelt Estate Artwork Donation Details & Justification: This gift of one work by Martie Zelt is an excellent compliment to work by this artist already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 1. Martie Zelt (Roswell Artist-in-Residence 1982-1983 and 1989-1990), Untitled, 2023, Mixed Media Construction, Completed by Agustín (Lucho) Pozo Gávez After the Artist’s Death, 30.125x30.875” (Framed) Martha “Martie” Zelt was born in Washington, Pennsylvania in 1930. Zelt studied at Connecticut College and then the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the 1940s-1950s before receiving a BA from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1968. Zelt moved to Roswell in 1982 when she was accepted into the RAiR program. After moving away to teach in various arts education programs, Zelt returned to Roswell in 1989 for another RAiR residency. This time, after the residency, she stayed local to teach part-time. During the 1990s, Zelt created a number of mosaic murals here in Roswell. During her life, Zelt had three solo exhibitions here at the Roswell Museum in 1983, 1998, and 2013. Zelt passed away at the age of 92 on May 11, 2023 in Roswell. External Source: https://www.roswell-nm.gov/1831/Remembering-Martie-Zelt This gift of one mixed media artwork by Zelt is an excellent compliment to the one drawing, ten mixed media artworks, and eight prints by this artist that is already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 1 Board of Trustees Meeting 9/16/2024 Acquisition Approval: Gift of the Institute of Historical Survey Foundation (IHSF) Artwork Donation Details & Justification: This gift of up to 575 objects will, if approved, be donated to the Roswell Museum’s archive. These works are from the artwork portion of IHSF’s John Meigs collection. It includes works by a number of artists already in the Roswell Museum’s collection, including Leonard Baskin, Julio Larraz, Clinton Taylor Meigs, John Meigs, and Olive Rush. Olive Rush 3 IHSF, as an organization, is sunsetting, permanently suspending their operations, and are looking to disperse their collections to other institutions, such as the Roswell Museum, for preservation. Staff have reviewed all objects in the artwork portion of IHSF’s John Meigs collection and they and the Acquisitions Working Group recommend accepting the donation of up to these 575 objects into the Roswell Museum’s archive. Once the objects are on site, museum staff will review the objects again and will recommend accessioning a subset of these archival objects into the permanent collection; seeking Board of Trustees approval at a later date. Both John and Clinton Taylor Meigs had solo exhibitions here at the Roswell Museum. John Meigs was an avid collector of works by other artists, is an important figure in the history of the Roswell Museum, and donated many works to our permanent collection before his death in 2003.
