ROSWELL PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
4:00 p.m. October 25, 2012 Bondurant Room
MEMBERS
PRESENT: Marna Hunt, Magil Duran, Judy Armstrong, Patti Bristol and Linda Madrid
MEMBERS
ABSENT: Elizabeth Shamas
OTHERS
PRESENT: Barbara Patterson, City Attorney; Stacye Hunter, Assistant City Manager; Savino
Sanchez, City Council Library Liaison; Betty Long, Library Director; and Kay
Carrasco, Recording Secretary
CALL TO
ORDER: Marna Hunt, President, called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Members present
noted. A quorum was present.
MINUTES: Ms. Hunt asked if there were any corrections/additions to the minutes of the
September 27, 2012 meeting. There were none. Mr. Duran moved to approve the
minutes as presented, seconded by Dr. Armstrong, and the motion passed.
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT: Director Betty Long presented her written report; in addition to her written report,
Ms. Long addressed other matters:
• Earlier this week, the Library and Roswell SAFE Coalition co-sponsored a
program of outreach to the community, focusing on safety issues during the
holidays. Topics such as carbon monoxide poisoning, fires from various holiday
decorations and displays, and other issues were covered by the Roswell Fire
Department, Police Dept., Sheriff’s Dept., and the State Police. News of interest
is that Knox boxes (a keyed lockbox that only first responders can access) are
now available for individual residences. More than 30 people attended the
event.
• Ms. Long distributed new bookmarks with financial information regarding
Bond B, the general obligation bond for libraries, which will be on the
November ballot. The original bookmarks were modified to correct the
information on how much property taxes would increase because actually, this
bond will not raise taxes! A previous bond is expiring, making the current Bond
B a straight-across replacement cost, not an increase.
• Planning has already begun for next year’s Summer Reading program. One of
our Children’s Dept. employees will attend a workshop next month.
REPLACEMENT
BOARD MEMBER:
Ms. Long reported that she has had three persons recommended by various current
Board members to fill the unexpired term of Danny Armijo, and had shared the
information by email as it came in. The Board members discussed the choices; not
all were known to all members, though everyone knew at least some. Ms. Long
reviewed the procedure, reminding the Board that the Mayor may not choose from
this list at all, as is his right.
Dr. Armstrong moved that all three names be submitted. Ms. Madrid seconded. The
motion passed and Ms. Long said that she would send the list to Mayor Jurney the
next day.
OTHER
BUSINESS: Ms. Hunt said that she is always impressed with the Value of Services report which
is part of the Director’s Report each month; it is very gratifying to see the work of
the Library expressed as dollar figures, how that really demonstrates the Library’s
value to the community.
Ms. Madrid spoke of how much she loves the new self-checkout systems, which she
uses a lot as she gathers materials for the Books on Wheels program. The machines
are attractive, easy to use, and actually fun.
ADJOURN-
MENT: The meeting was adjourned by Ms. Hunt at 4:20pm.
NEXT
MEETING: January 24, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. in the Bondurant Room.
Marna Hunt, President Kay Carrasco, Recording Secretary
