INTRODUCTIONS:
Ms. Hunt introduced and welcomed new Board members Michelle
Hembree and Lewie Montgomery.
MINUTES: Ms. Hunt asked if there were any corrections or additions to the
minutes of the March 27th meeting; there were none. Dr. Armstrong
moved that the minutes be accepted, Ms. Madrid seconded, and the motion
passed. Ms. Hunt then asked if there were corrections or additions to the
special meeting of April 1st. Dr. Armstrong gave the correct spelling of
Janet Macaluso’s name; no further corrections. Dr. Armstrong moved to
accept the minutes as corrected, Ms. Madrid seconded, and the motion
passed.
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT:
In addition to her written report Betty Long, Library Director, reported that
the major news was that the contract for HVAC engineering (system design)
has been signed. Following approval of the design work, bidding will open
for the actual system replacement.
Ms. Long showed one of the Summer Reading t-shirts, which has the theme
“Fizz, Boom, READ!”. She told about our posting a challenge on the
Library’s facebook page today, asking patrons how many shirts they still
had from previous years—and within an hour, a patron had posted a photo
of all six! Summer Reading will launch June 1st and have plenty of exciting
elements, including a helicopter; some returning favorites such as the dairy
cow; and several popular entertainers.
Ms. Hunt then explained the other materials included in the packet for the
new Board members: the calendar of events and value of services.
NOMINATIONS
COMMITTEE:
Dr. Armstrong reported for the Nominations Committee the slate of
officers for 2014-2015, as follows: President, Marna Hunt; Vice President,
Magil Duran; and Secretary, Linda Madrid. Dr. Armstrong moved to
accept the report and the motion passed. Voting will take place May 22nd.
MEETING
DATES: Ms. Hunt explained for the new members that the Board normally votes to
suspend meetings in June, July, August, November and December,
although should an urgent issue arise, a special meeting could be called.
Dr. Armstrong moved that instead of voting on the matter twice every year
that the Board make it a permanent practice, unless it is voted to change
that schedule. Ms. Madrid seconded, and the motion passed.
SPECIAL
PRESENTATIONS:
Ms. Hunt thanked the two retiring Board members, Elizabeth Shamas and
Ed David, for their dedication and service to the Library. She gave each a
card signed by all Board members, and explained that the two books on
the nearby table had been purchased for the Library in their honor
(“Kipling Abroad” and “Tales from the Sidelines.”) Mr. David and Ms.
Shamas expressed their appreciation.
