MINUTES
PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
Thursday, September 5, 2013 – 7:00 p.m.
Mahany/Meininger Senior Center
MEMBERS PRESENT: Stan Schaffer, Mike Ripinski, Rob Winter, Mark Ryan, Vince
Cassisa, Todd Menig, Bill Staubach, Alex Fike and City Commissioner Fournier
ALSO PRESENT: Tod Gazetti
MEMBERS EXCUSED: None
Chairperson Menig called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Ryan, seconded by Ripinski to approve the April 4,
2013 minutes. Motion passed unanimously.
City Commission Comments: Commissioner Fournier informed the Board that the City
Commission, through resolution, will designate monies from Arts, Beats and Eats to
capital improvements in parks; amounts will vary based on profits.
Public Comment: None
Business:
a. War Memorial Update – Mr. Gazetti informed the Board that he and Mr. Rassel
met with the War Memorial Committee to approve additional landscaping in and
around the memorial. Blueprint was provided, no action is necessary.
b. Park Improvement Update:
1. Optimist – construction on the new thirty thousand dollar Optimist
playground will begin the last week of September.
2. Huntington Woods – construction of the new thirty thousand dollar
playground will begin at the conclusion of the Optimist
construction. The City Maintenance Department is
constructing both playgrounds.
c. Lockman Tennis Courts – Quotes for resurfacing Lockman $14,000 and
Meininger $16,000 were received from Goddard Resurfacing. This
project is scheduled for the fall, still waiting for the decision from the
U.S.T.A. regarding the grant application that was submitted by Luv-All
Tennis on behalf of the city.
d. Starr Park – Mr. Rassel is exploring possibilities for funding for a new
playground structure at Starr Park.

Informational Items:
a. Adopt a Park – The Parks and Recreation Department raised approximately $10,000
for Parkfest and Adopt–A-Park, these monies can be used for future
park improvements.
b. City Branding – Mr. Gazetti passed out the new logo and tagline for the City of Royal
Oak. Discussion followed, no action needed.
Items not on the Agenda: Roots Foundation – Motion by Fournier, seconded by Menig
to appoint Mike Ripinski as the alternate representative of the Parks and Recreation
Board to the ROOTS Foundation. Motion passed unanimously.
Upcoming Events: None announced
Next Meeting – October 3, 2013 @ 7:00 p.m. @ Mahany/Meininger Senior Center
Motion by Ryan and seconded by Winter to adjourn at 8:58 p.m. Motion passed
unanimously.
