PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
Thursday, May 1, 2014 – 7:00 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Stan Schaffer, Mike Ripinski, Rob Winter, Todd Menig,
Alex Fike, Amanda Klein, Phil Smith, Mark Ryan and City Commissioner Mike
Fournier
ALSO PRESENT: Tod Gazetti, Superintendent of Recreation and Greg Rassel,
Director of Public Service
MEMBERS EXCUSED: None
Chairperson Menig called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes: March 2014 – Motion by Schaffer, seconded by Winter
to approve the March minutes. Motion passed unanimously.
II. City Commission Comments: Commissioner Fournier informed the Board:
the City Commission is engaged in budget discussions, with the public safety
millage behind us, the Commission can now concentrate more on park
improvements. Royal Oak was named one of the top ten most exciting cities in
Michigan.
III. Public Comment: Debra and Kurt Lobring expressed concern about the
downed fencing along Meijer Drive as well as the amount of garbage coming
from Meijer’s.
IV. Business:
a. Park Clean Up Weekend – On April 26th and 27th thirty-eight different
groups/organizations volunteered at twenty-five parks throughout the city.
The amount of garbage, sticks and limbs collected at curbside was
amazing. This program continues to grow and help the city with its early
spring clean up.
b. Royal Oak Driving Range – No update since the last meeting
c. Royal Oak Golf Courses – No update since the last meeting
d. Grand Slam Batting Cages – Mr. Roy is open for business and is
operating on a one-year extension. Mr. Roy has expressed interest in
working out a long term lease in the fall of 2014.
e. Lindell Ice Arena – No update at this time
f. Nature Society – The Nature Society has many spring and summer nature
walks scheduled, please visit the cities website or refer to the INSIGHT
newsletter for dates, times and locations.
g. Park Equipment Update – Installation on our third new playground
structure will begin this month at Starr-J.C. Park, this will be the largest
structure in the city. Tennis court resurfacing projects will be begin this
year at Waterworks, Meininger, and Elks Park.
V. Items Not on the Agenda – None at this time
VI. Upcoming Events – Royal Oak in Bloom – May 11th.
Scrap Electronics Recycling – May 3rd.
Next Meeting – September 11, 2014 @ 7:00 p.m. @ Mahany/Meininger Senior
Center
Motion by Fike and seconded by Winter to adjourn at 7:58 p.m. Motion passed
unanimously.
