PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
Thursday, September 10, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.
Mahany-Meininger Senior Center

MEMBERS PRESENT: Jill Robinson, Paul Kanan, Matt Harmon, Mike Ripinski, Todd Menig, Alex
Fike, Mark Ryan, Amanda Klein and City Commissioner Mike Fournier.
ALSO PRESENT: Tod Gazetti, Superintendent of Recreation; Greg Rassel, Director of Recreation &
Public Service.
MEMBERS EXCUSED: Phil Smith
Meeting called to order at 7:03 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes:
Motion by Ripinski, seconded by Klein to approve the minutes of May 7, 2015. Motion passed
unanimously.
II. City Commission Comments: Commissioner Fournier informed the Board the Commission will start
talking about the budget and promises to keep Recreation at the forefront and continue to look at alternative
funding for the park projects.
III. Public Comment:
Mike Sigular, 315 California expressed the need for playground replacement at Wendland Park.
Katherine Maggi, 727 Farnum, expressed concerns about the noise of the pickleball courts and the heavy
traffic flow. She submitted a letter to the City.
IV. Business:
a. Pickleball Courts: There was discussion about the noise and parking at the Whittier pickleball
courts. Mr. Gazetti was going to send an email to the players reminding them as a courtesy
to the residents to park in new parking lot versus the street. Tod is also investigating noise
reducing screening that goes on the fence.
b. Re-Naming of Huntington Woods Park: Mr. Rassel informed the board that there has been
some talk about re-naming Huntington Woods Park; without more specific information the
board agreed to table this item until more information was presented.
c. Ice Arena Capital Improvements: All capital improvements have been completed at the Ice
Arena for the 2015-16 fiscal years. The Parks and Recreation Advisory meeting in
November will be held at the John Lindell Ice Arena. A tour of the arena will be given at the
end of the meeting.
d. Normandy Oaks Update: City administration and the City Commission are analyzing the
proposals and should have a decision within the next two commission meetings. The city is
planning to meet with the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Board to see what interest
they may have at Normandy Oaks.
e. Grand Slam Contract: This item is on the September 14, 2015 City Commission Agenda,
approval is expected.
f. Total Soccer Contract: Mr. Rassel and Mr. Gazetti met with the staff of Total Soccer on a
five-year extension, the City Attorney is working out the details, should be on the
Commission’s agenda before year end.
g. Park Improvement Updates: Mr. Rassel informed the board that the playground structure at
Wagner Park is completed and the playground structure at Westwood Park is in the final
phase.
V. Items not on the agenda:
ROOTS Alternate: Motion by Commissioner Fournier, seconded by Mr. Menig to appoint
Amanda Klein as the alternate to the ROOTS Committee. Motion passed unanimously.
VI. Upcoming Events:
Paws in the Park is October 3 and 4 at Memorial Park, this event is sponsored by the Royal
Oak Chamber of Commerce
VII. Next Meeting – November 5, 2015 @ 7:00 p.m. @ John Lindell Ice Arena
Motion by Fike and seconded by Ryan to adjourn at 8:08 p.m. Motion passed unanimously.
