City of Royal Oak Recreation Department 1600 North Campbell Road Royal Oak, MI 48067 248-246-.3180 Minutes Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Advisory Board Thursday March 8, 2018 at 7:00p.m. Mahany/Meninger Senior/Community Center 3500 Marias Avenue Royal Oak, MI 48067 Meeting called to Order 7:00pm. Members Present: Tim Ciechorski, Kaila Huehner, Jeffrey Plachta, Paul Kanan, CamilleThompson, Mike Ripinski, Mark Ryan, Commissioner Macey Also Present: John Fedele, Superintendent of Recreation, Greg Rassel, Director of Rec. & Public Service. Members Absent: Jill Robinson I. Approval of Minutes: October 5, 2017 – Motion by Commissioner Macey, seconded by Tim to approve February minutes. Motion passed unanimously. II. City Commission Comments: Commissioner Macey discussed the Senior Task Force to research and come up with areas of need in community III. Public Comment: -Jill Bills involved in rat program is working on education with a 3-minute video to help citizens with control of rats. Ms. Bills suggested getting receptacles that are “rat proof.” Ms. Bills had concerns with pet waste in parks during the winter season.  Greg Rassel advised receptacles are removed in winter for staff to access parks. Also noted a city ordinance that says, citizen’s pet waste must be bagged and brought back to residence during winter to be disposed of. - Tom Allen inquired about Wi-Fi access throughout the City of Royal Oak. Mr. Allen was concerned on why the City of Royal Oak buildings do not have Wi-Fi and would be happy if the Senior Center did have Wi-Fi.  Greg Rassel advised Wi-Fi is currently in the Library, Farmers Market and Eagle Plaza with plans in place and in queue to add Wi-Fi in Senior Center and Ice Arena. IV. Business: a. Public Hearing for Parks and Recreation Master Plan: None b. Normandy Oaks Update: Phase 1 approved and moving forward. Applied for CBDG money for Elks Park to take care of tennis courts, basketball courts. Jeff is on schedule for bids first of May. Commissioner Macey stated the DDA portion is contingent on spending $5 million which must be spent on parks. c. Downtown Park: Greg Rassel mentioned a kickoff meeting for March 26 7 pm at City Hall Commission Chambers V. Items not on the Agenda: None VI. Upcoming Events a. St. Patrick’s Day Parade b. April Events i. Park Cleanup: April 21-22-Call DPS and DPS will assign park ii. Arbor Day: April 26- Tree planting ceremony scheduled for 10 am or 11 am southside of Senior Center with preschool kids. Next Meeting: Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 7:00p.m. Motion by Mark Ryan, seconded by Jeff Plachta to adjourn at 7:44 p.m. Motion passed unanimously.
