City of Royal Oak Recreation Department 1600 North Campbell Road Royal Oak, MI 48067 248-246-.3180 Minutes Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Advisory Board Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 7:00p.m. Zoom Royal Oak, MI 48067 Meeting called to Order 7:05 PM Members Present: Sarah Kindinger, Tim Ciechorski, Commissioner Melanie Macey, Mike Ripinski, Crystal Chow, Maya Lane Harris Also, Present: John Fedele, Superintendent of Recreation, Aaron Filipski Director Public Works and Recreation Members Absent: Ilene Orlanski, Paul Kanan I. Approval of Minutes: Motion Sarah Kindinger, second by Mike Ripinski. Unanimously approved II. City Commission Comments: Proposition #1 approved during the election, received an e-mail from Janice Wagman regarding senior outreach. Talks about establishing a list. Status changed for Covid in Oakland County from C to E. III. Public Comment: None End Public Comment IV. Business: a. Senior Outreach - Aaron Filipski – had a good discussion with a Boys Scout member, although member was interested in a building project, the scouts may consider a service project. We have a list but must honor those people’s privacy. Can take an ad out on the back page of insight with material. - Commissioner Macey – likes the idea of a Facebook ad targeted towards seniors. Gather volunteers as well through Facebook outreach. Send in next round of water bills a link to the website with information. Make it easy to remember. - Tim Ciechorski – expressed concern with water bill method, for those who don’t receive a water bill there are some heavy populated seniors. - Mike Ripinski – In lieu of water bill, provide handouts to Barton Towers, assisted living centers in Royal Oak. - Commissioner Macey – cost for water bill insert or flyer?  John Fedele - mentions that an insert in the water bill is $13k and a flyer through his insight mailer to all addresses was $6k - Sarah Kindinger - likes the postcard with mail, established seniors are not using technology and can reach the demographic through the post office. - Crystal Chow – mentions adding something on the water bills envelop itself. b. Tentative Opening Plan for Indoor Activities - John Fedele – with hopes capacity restrictions increase, have put together a limited indoor class schedule for both Senior Center and Salter Center. Current occupancy limits for Senior Center is 92 people and Salter Center is 80 people. Classroom sizes that usually hold 50 people will be reduced to 12 – 20 people depending on classroom size. Class times will have a longer period in between to prevent congregation, 6 feet markers will be placed on the floor and rooms will be disinfected between classes via foggers that were purchased. . c. Department Reports - John Fedele mentions Normandy Oaks Park Halloween kickoff event on Saturday 10/31/2020 from 11 – 2 pm. Dignitaries from Royal Oak and Oakland County will be present as well as the public for a site tour. Everyone seemed excited and ready for park opening. Crews are working on Bassett Park with the upgraded play equipment and the equipment is one of a kind. - Aaron Filipski mentions the Boy Scouts are working with the Nature Society on trails, DPS donating sand. Dog park hardware installed and working, any issues can be worked on at the clerk’s office. V. Items not on the Agenda: Mike Ripinski – mentions the golf course patio area can be leveled out with mulch to create a nice outdoor seating area. VI. Upcoming Events Thanksgiving Curbside Pickup at the Senior Center on November 17, 2020 from 11:45 – 12:45 pm. To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, to protect the public health, and provide essential protections to vulnerable Michiganders, it is crucial that all Michiganders take steps to limit in-person contact. The critical mitigation measures include social distancing and limiting the number of people interacting at public gatherings. Conducting the November 5, 2020 Regular Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Advisory Board Meeting in person would risk the personal health or safety of members of the public and/or the City Commission. Therefore, the meeting will be held electronically, in compliance with PA 228 of 2020 and procedures established by the Royal Oak City Commission.
