Salem Beautification Minutes from 10/9/18
Meeting started at 7:03pm.
In attendance Lisa Lyons, Ellen Talkowsky, Sam Fiore, Sandi Power, Giulia Bellofatto, Annie Scott, Ty Hapworth,
Stephanie Hagyard.
Absent Mary Ellen Haliwell, Bill Doane
Brief discussion regarding Barbara Sirios. Should she take a sabbatical? Should she be asked to resign or re-appoint
someone new? We will address after Ellen Talkowsky’s vacation.
September minutes will be approved in November. Lisa suggests combining November and December meetings. All
agree.
Discussion on pumpkin decorating- went over list of volunteers and times - a few more volunteers are needed. Shifts are
10-12 on Saturday and Sunday. Judging will be at 12:00 on Sunday. Ellen will bring color stickers, forms for kids to fill out,
pens and signs for age categories.
Ellen and Sandi discussed removal and storage of sponsor signs. Ellen will have to get back to Sandi at a later date.
Ellen, Sam and Giulia discussed curb painting. Will need to wait and order the paint in the spring. Will talk to Ellen to pull
a PO for Ace Hardware/Winer Brothers.
LOS take down date, after Halloween. Maybe the 8th or 9th of November.
Fountain Project – Mary Ellen had previously suggested plantings at the top of the fountain for aesthetic purposes. Ellen
pointed out that there is no way to water plantings at that height. Ellen inquires about planting a small patch that’s in
front of the heritage building (??). Bcomm members do not think this is doable.
Sandi reports - Central Street project, Tuesday Oct 2nd and Wed Oct 3rd. In attendance, Sandi, Sam, Jillian (Emporium 32)
& Giovanni Alabiso from Salem Historical Tours. The Central Street shop owners spent $300. 7x22 foot section
successfully planted.
Traffic Islands
Sam and Giulia have decorated the urns on the Washington St. strip with pumpkins. Sandi found the missing RCG sign
from the Washington strip. Sam received a check from John Boris, which is made out to Salem Garden Club. She will ask
John to write a new check to Bcomm.
Tomorrow Sandi is planting bulbs at Temperance Park, tulips and daffodils at Riley Plaza, on Hosta Island & Mazow and
McCullough’s Island.
A Plus, St Jeans’ Credit Union, and SSU will return to the new island area created at the corner of Lafayette St. and Loring
Avenue.
Sandi discussed new islands at Loring Square/Loring intersections will need sponsors and also the island at Canal and
Broadway and the O’Keefe island .
Lisa made a motion to appoint Giulia Bellofatto as Bcomm secretary. Vote, All in favor.
Motion to adjourn at 7:45pm.
