CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Kimberley Driscoll Mayor Salem Youth Commission Meeting Minutes July 25, 2016 Attendance: Meeting Called to Order The meeting called to order at 5:10 pm, the motion was moved by Nick Angeramo and seconded by Samuel Hoang Introductions & Public Comments Introductions were made by all Youth Commissioners as a new member Andrew Bouche was present for the first time at a meeting. Laura Assade announced that visitors from Salem University would be present at the next Youth Commission meeting on August 8, 2016. Laura also updated members on the Youth Conference being held at Bryant College. Samuel Hoang and Ruby Cheresnowsky will be attending the conference. Previous Meeting Minutes The minutes from July 11, 2016 noted Kahlil Mitchell Smith as being present and he was not present so his name was removed from the minutes. Nick Angeramo moved that we adopt the minutes from 6/27/16 and the minutes from 7/11/16 with the necessary changes. It was seconded by Samuel Hoang. The motion passed. Sticker Shock Campaign Laura Assade gave an update on the sticker shock campaign noting that her and Jared Lubas took the lead on this project and spent an hour and placed of 300 stickers on bottles that were in various stores that sold alcohol in Salem. Youth needs assessment During the meeting Felicia Pierce expressed the lack of response to sending in questions to the survey for the community. The commission was asked if they would like to move forward with the community survey. The commission agreed and spent 20 minutes Salem City Hall – 93 Washington Street – Salem, MA 01970-3592 Ph. 978-745-9595 Fax 978-744-9327 having discussion and creating question for the community survey. The working groups and larger group produced the following questions to be implemented on the survey. The committee approved the survey below. The survey will be created via survey monkey by Felicia Pierce and will be ready for distribution on 8/1/16. Each commissioner agreed to distributing the survey to peers and outlined catchment areas. 1. How old are you? a. Are you younger than 10 b. Between the ages of 11-16 c. Between the ages of 16-21 d. Are you older than 21 2. Rate importance 1-5 one being the most important and 5 being what is most important that you would like to see the youth commission focus on a. Drugs and Alcohol Education b. Health and Sexual Education c. More fun activities in the community (Example- Game Night) d. Volunteer Opportunities e. Other 3. If one of your top choices is other, please type your idea below 4. If you would like more information, please feel free to submit your email Future Guest Speakers The committee decided to table this discussion to the next meeting Membership Laura Assade explained the difference between Commissioners and Associate Members, members can be found on city of Salem website. Commissioners have the ability to vote and run for a position on the commission as opposed to associate members do not have the ability to vote at meetings or run for a position. The position of scribe which will be a rotating position allows Salem City Hall – 93 Washington Street – Salem, MA 01970-3592 Ph. 978-745-9595 Fax 978-744-9327  associate members to hold a position and they will be responsible for recording meeting minutes. The following commissioners are interested in running for a position: a. Nick Angeramo - Chair b. Jared Lubas - Vice Chair c. Interested candidates will fill out a Candidate profile sheet and must submit all paperwork in person or by email on Monday August 8th d.
