Meeting Minutes (Rescheduled Meeting)
January 30, 2016
Attendance:

Meeting Called to Order
The meeting called to order at 6:02pm
Introductions & Public Comments:
Youth Commission members took the time to reflect on former President Obama’s farewell speech
and the Inauguration of President Trump. Also, took the time to share feelings with regards to new
executive orders that have been passed since the Inauguration.
Previous Meeting Minutes:
Collin made a motion to accept December meeting minutes, Michael second the motion. Motion
passed and minutes were approved.
Cont. of Shoebox Service learning Project:
Commissioners expressed wanting to involve the schools more. Maybe organize better so that each
school is responsible for 1 or two items. Potentially have competitions and involving more students
to participate in collecting and packing items. Commissioners were excited about their first project
as they were able to pack over 150 boxes for families in addition to toy donation.
Current/Future Projects:
Student Government Day:
Jared mentioned that last time he spoke with Ms. Mansfield she did not oppose to passing the
project along to the Salem Youth Commission. She mentioned it was difficult to make the event a
full day due to lack of participation. Youth commissioners thought that we would keep the same
schedule except add a mock trial for the 2nd half of the day which will allow participating youth to

work on a city issue and find a solution. Vice Chair Jared Lubas suggested we start thinking about
getting food donations, a venue to host lunch and mock trial location (either city council chambers
or School Committee chambers. Last year about 12-15 students participated in SGD. We want to
be able to get information out to potential participants as soon as possible. Flyers will be made
and other members will get necessary information prior to the next meeting.
City Council Meetings:
Youth Commission Chair, Nick Angeramo at the last meeting mentioned to all commissioners that
we should start thinking about attend council meetings which are held the 2nd and 4th Thursday of
every month. It was suggested that a list of all the remaining meetings go out in list form which
will allow commissioners to sign up for at least one meeting and attend for an hour. Other
suggestions were made to have it be mandatory for SYC members to attend and bring back
feedback to the meeting. Members will be required to get a form signed to get credit for attending
the meetings.
Announcements:
-There was an announcement for commissioners to look in to the SAIL Program
-Students were invited and informed about Upcoming Generation Games Feb 3-5th
-Youth commissioners were interested in how the events were being advertised and
wanted to make suggestions to parks and rec; asked to invite P&R Dept. to a YC
meeting.
-Salem Award foundation invited Members to participate in their 6 word memoir.
Information was given to them about how to write one and where they can submit their
own.
- Volunteer Opportunity: SYC members were invited to attend a volunteer meeting to
discuss First Books opportunity. The meeting will be held 2/13/17 at Union Hall – Colonial
Road.
