CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Kimberley Driscoll Mayor Salem Youth Commission Meeting Minutes March 20, 2017 Attendance: Aiyana Lilly, Jared Lubas, Laura Assade, Ruby Cheresnowsky, Nick Angeramo, Lilly Gonzalez, Naccia Whittaker Meeting Called to Order The meeting called to order at 6:11pm Introductions & Public Comments: Discussed upcoming town meetings, movies that were watched and how everyone’s weekend went. Previous Meeting Minutes: Jared made a motion to accept February meeting minutes, Aiyana second the motion. Motion passed and minutes were approved. Student Government Day: Youth commissioners were given an update on what has been happening with student government. So far we have the flyer, youth applications and invitation to for adult participants sent out as of March 7th. There was also a letter sent to local restaurants requesting for them to sponsor our lunch for 25 students for Student Government day. We discussed the timeline again to make sure we are all on track. Youth Commissioners also discussed the topic for the Youth Council meeting. Three options were: 1) Location for a new community Center 2) New Cinema Salem theater and mall 3) Petition to Expand Marijuana dispensary in Salem. We did agree that these would all be all fictional cases and they are not to portray real time situations. The cases are only for the sole purpose of understanding how this scenario will affect their job as the person they shadowed for the day. This also would help them understand a better structure of how a youth council meeting will run, give youth to experience debating, decision making and exposure Salem City Hall – 93 Washington Street – Salem, MA 01970-3592 Ph. 978-745-9595 Fax 978-744-9327 to Salem City Hall. The day of activities will be held on Thursday, April 13th, 2017 with a full schedule which include two hours of shadow from a professional of their choice, lunch and have a 90-minute mock trial. Deadline to receive all the application is set for March 31st 2017. SYC members will continue to recruit members before the 31st. Old/New Business: Ruby gave an update from her meeting at with First Book. They are working on a campaign to raise $9000 and they need the help of Salem residents to sign a petition for the city to receive 45K books for all kids in Salem. More to come after the next meeting. There was also discussion about upcoming meetings with regards to sanctuary city. We also discussed the importance of attending YC meetings and making sure its on everyone’s calendar to avoid sending out a number of reminders. Next Meeting: Due to our next meeting falling on April Vacation, Youth Commissioners voted to move the meeting for earlier in the Morning 10am – 12pm on Monday 4/17/17 at 120 Washington 3rd Floor conference room Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned at 8:07 PM Salem City Hall – 93 Washington Street – Salem, MA 01970-3592 Ph. 978-745-9595 Fax 978-744-9327
