CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Kimberley Driscoll Mayor Salem Youth Commission Draft Meeting Minutes May 15, 2017 Attendance: Laura Assade, Nick Angeramo, Naccia Whittaker, Felicia Pierce, Aiyana Lilly, Colin McLean, Samuel Hoang, Jorge Gomez-Frometa, AnneryLee Gonzalez, Ruby Cheresnowsky, Emily Ullman Meeting Called to Order The meeting called to order at 6:06pm Introductions & Public Comments: No public comments Previous Meeting Minutes: Collin made a motion to approve the meeting minutes for March and April, motion was seconded by Nick Angeramo. Additional feedback from Student Government Day: Over all members thought it was a great day and are looking forward to planning it again. Some youth commissioners expressed that the topic was probably not a good one to discuss and did not like the direction it was headed. They felt that some of the same people kept getting up to speak in front of the council. The experience was great. Suggested that we should find more ways to engage the departments more on the topic. Recruitment/Officers & Other business: Youth discussed ways for us to recruit other youth to join the Commission. Some ways discussed was through social media, word of mouth and went into discussion of having a couple open house’s over the summer to attract youth. Members decided that they would hold two open houses on July 25th at10:30am and August 14th at 5:30pm tentatively at the North Shore CDC Conference room. Members also discussed election of officers, set the date of when the next Salem City Hall – 93 Washington Street – Salem, MA 01970-3592 Ph. 978-745-9595 Fax 978-744-9327 election would be and when their nominations should be turned in. Nomination deadline is August 29th meeting and elections should take place at the September 18th Meeting. Summer Schedule: For July and August, Youth commissioners decided they would meet twice a month on the following dates and times: July 10th 5:00pm – 120 Washington Street 3rd Floor medium conference room July 25th 10:00am – North Shore CDC Conference room 96 Lafayette Street (Open House Date) August 14th 5:00pm – North Shore CDC Conference room 96 Lafayette Street (Open House Date) August 29th 10:00am - 120 Washington Street 3rd Floor medium conference room Old/New business: (Youth Dialogue Training) Emily Ullman came by to provide the youth with an update on the youth dialogue training. First training is on Friday, May 19th at 120 Washington Street and youth are expected to show at 8:30am. So far 5 youth commissioners will be participating and another two who have yet to submit applications. (Salem Rotary Club) Those who will be 10th and 11th graders next school year received the information about the retreat and opportunity for scholarship. Two members took home the application home for review with their parents. (Youth 2 Youth) the members were provided with an update with regards to funding and opportunity to fundraise for the conference. All youth agreed that a couple of SYC members should attend. Felicia will send a draft letter to send to potential funders. (Trust Fund Presentation) Mayors office liaison shared that the members of the Trust Fund commission would be more than happy to have them at their meeting to provide them with information on Commission and scholarship opportunities.
