Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting Minutes - Draft Tuesday, November 25, 2019, 6:30 P.M., City Hall Annex, 98 Washington Street Called to Order: 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Tyler Carlton, Elizabeth McGovern, Jennifer McAlpine, Amy Stewart Staff Present: Dominick Pangallo 1. Welcome and introductions 2. Approval of minutes The committee unanimously approved the minutes of October 22, 2019. 3. Financial update The Scholarship Fund received $1,147.77 in October and has a balance of $ 2,233.09. The Education Fund received $192.86 in October and has a balance of $22,587.21. Dominick distributed the four-year trends for July, August, September, and October. 4. Old business a. Education Fund grant applications review The Committee received two new grant applications since the October meeting. After discussing the five applications, the Committee voted to approve $5,250 in the following grant amounts to the applicants: • Annemarie Guertin, Saltonstall School literacy coach. To purchase reading materials and books for Grades 1-4. Amount awarded: $1,000 • LEAP for Education. Funding to support the operation of the organization’s Teen Center, serving Salem High School, New Liberty Innovation School, and Salem Academy Charter School students. Amount awarded: $500 • Kristen Morneau, Salem High School Bridge Program. For students to participate in program trips to Project Adventure in Beverly. Amount awarded: $1,500 • Nancy Charest, Salem Early Childhood Center. To purchase iPads for classrooms and speech and language therapists to use in the school. Amount awarded: $1,750 • SSU/SHS Salem’s Next Leaders youth mentoring program. To fund workshop supplies for SHS 9th and 10th graders participating in the mentoring program. Amount awarded: $500 b. Status of special act relative to the Education Fund No update, still in committee. c. Fundraising Dominick reported that the fundraiser at the 99 raised $93.99 and the one at Flatbread raised $105, in addition to $195 taken in through the 50/50 raffle. The Committee discussed other fundraising strategies, including road races, involvement in the Salem So Sweet festival, applications to bank and realtor charitable foundations, and a public appeal via a letter to the editor from Tyler. 5. New business The Committee decided to cancel the December meeting and next meet in January. Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 28th, 6:30 p.m., City Hall Annex Adjourned: 7:23 p.m.
