Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting Minutes - Draft
Tuesday, June 23, 2020, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Called to Order: 6:35 p.m.
Members Present: Tyler Carlton, Elizabeth McGovern, Jennifer McAlpine, Cynthia Nina-Soto, Amy

1. Call to Order
2. Approval of minutes
On a motion by Liz, seconded by Cynthia, the committee unanimously approved the minutes of April 28,
2020.
3. Financial update
The Scholarship Fund has a balance of $3,485.65. The Education Fund has a balance of $16,523.66.
Dominick shared the four-year trend of receipts for both funds for May.
4. Old business
a. Fundraising updates
The committee discussed reaching out to the organizers of the pop-up drive-in events to see if the text-to-
donate information could be shared on the movie screen before the films. Tyler offered to speak with
them. Dominick indicated that bank foundations were still awarding grants, despite the recession, and
Tyler offered to resume investigating those.
5. New business
a. Review of Scholarship applications
The committee reviewed the 23 applications received for the 2020 Salem Scholarships and discussed the
merits and needs of the applicants. On a motion by Amy, seconded by Liz, the committee unanimously
voted to award $500 scholarships to Teebh Al-Freihy, Sarah Curley, Damian Flynn, Jillian Flynn, and
Aiyana Lilly.
b. Meeting day
Liz asked if the committee meetings could be moved to a new date start in the fall due to a conflict.
Dominick offered to put together some options for a new schedule and bring them before the committee at
the August meeting.
c. Jennifer McAlpine
Jennifer announced that she would be stepping down from the committee as she is moving out of Salem.
The other members thanked her for her service to the committee and the community and wished her well
on the move.
d. July meeting
The committee decided not to meet in July.

Pursuant to Governor Baker’s March 12, 2020 Order Suspending Certain Provisions of the Open
Meeting Law, G.L. c. 30A, §20,and the Governor’s March 15, 2020 Order imposing strict
limitation on the number of people that may gather in one place, this meeting of the Salem
Scholarship & Education Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest
extent possible. Specific information and the general guidelines for remote participation by
members of the public and/or parties with a right and/or requirement to attend this meeting can
be found on the city’s website, at www.salem.com.

If any public comment is permitted, members of the public who have “raised their hand” in
Zoom will be called on by the chair to offer comment. In order to raise a hand, member of the

members of the public dialing in may press “*9” to raise their hand to speak.
No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be
made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via
technological means. In the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post
on the city’s website an audio or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of
proceedings as soon as possible after the meeting.
