Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes
Monday, June 14, 2021, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Members Present: Tyler Carlton, Lynne Mullen, Amy Stewart, Cynthia Nina Soto, Greg MacPhee
Staff Present: Dominick Pangallo
1. Call to Order: 6:30 p.m.
2. Approval of May 10, 2021 minutes: Lynne moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Amy,
approved 5-0.
3. Financial Updates: Dominick reported that the Education Fund took in $56 last month and has a
balance of $12,224.85 and the Scholarship Fund took in $79 and has a balance of $6,092.91.
4. Old Business
a. Fundraising Updates: Tyler reported no new updates on the grant applications. Cynthia
shared the concept of doing a virtual road race and offered to help put the plan together.
Tyler indicated he has his street performer’s license still and will be making use of it to
busk this October to raise some funds.
5. New Business
a. Review of Scholarship Fund applications: The committee reviewed the 26 applications
for 2021 scholarships. Two were removed as ineligible applicants. Among the remainder
the committee discussed various levels of financial need reported by the applicants and
commented on their personal statements. Following the committee’s deliberation, Amy
moved to award $750 scholarships to nine applicants: Sirena Baez, Olivier Bruno, Alex
Diefenbach, Braegan Fitzgerald, Tyler Geary, Natalia Grishin, Amy Jimenez, Sylvia
Marmolejos, and Angelis Segura. Motion was seconded by Cynthia and approved 5-0.
Dominick reported that he will send out the notification letters and prepare a press release
to announce the awards. Cynthia moved to transfer $2,000 from the Education Fund to the
Scholarship Fund. Motion was seconded by Greg and approved 5-0.
b. Review of Education Fund grant applications: None.

Pursuant to Governor Baker’s March 12, 2020 Order Suspending Certain Provisions of the Open
Meeting Law, G.L. c. 30A, §20, and the Governor’s March 15, 2020 Order imposing strict
limitation on the number of people that may gather in one place, this meeting of the Salem
Scholarship & Education Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest
extent possible. Specific information and the general guidelines for remote participation by
members of the public and/or parties with a right and/or requirement to attend this meeting can

If any public comment is permitted, members of the public who have “raised their hand” in

members of the public dialing in may press “*9” to raise their hand to speak.
No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be
made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via
technological means. In the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post
on the city’s website an audio or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of
proceedings as soon as possible after the meeting.
