Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes
Monday, October 19, 2021, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Members Present: Amy Stewart, Lynne Mullen, Liz McGovern (left at 7pm), Tyler Carlton, Andrew

Staff Present: Dominick Pangallo
1. Call to Order: 6:32 p.m.
2. Approval of September 13, 2021 minutes: Approved unanimously.
3. Financial Updates: Dominick reported that the Scholarship Fund took in $15.76 in September,
for a current balance of $3,771.33. The Education Fund took in $269.23 in September, for a
current balance of $14,366.43.
4. Old Business
a. Fundraising Updates: Tyler reported that he’s still not heard back on the foundation grant
applications and we will start the re-application process. Cynthia completed running the
virtual Boston Marathon fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund and Harborlight. Text-to-
donate fliers are in the City’s October shuttles. Dominick looked into if there is ARPA
funding that might be available to support either fund, but there is not.
5. New Business
a. Education Fund grants application round: The committee reviewed the eleven
applications for Education Fund grants and voted to approve grants for the following:
Salem High School, calculators for personal finance and business math classes: $300.00
Bates Elementary School, inclusive and culturally relevant library books: $1,000.00
Salem Academy Charter School (lower), inclusive and culturally relevant library books:
$500.00
Collins Middle School, headphones and sensory tools: $1,000.00
Salem High School/Salem State University, Salem Next Leaders program translation costs:
$500.00
SECC, Bates, and Horace Mann preschool classrooms, supplemental art supplies: $1,000.00
Salem Academy Charter School (upper), young adult library books: $500.00
Salem High School, boxing club equipment costs: $500.00
Horace Mann and Carlton schools, physical education and therapy equipment for students of
all abilities: $1,000.00
The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association, books and materials for Adult English
as a Second Language programs: $1,000.00
6. Adjourned: 7:18 p.m.

Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest extent possible. Specific

If any public comment is permitted, members of the public who have “raised their hand” in
Zoom will be called on by the chair to offer comment. In order to raise a hand, member of the
public using the Zoom computer or phone application may click the “Raise Hand” button;
members of the public dialing in may press “*9” to raise their hand to speak.
No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be
made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via
technological means. In the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post
on the city’s website an audio or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of
proceedings as soon as possible after the meeting.
