Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes Monday, June 13, 2022, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely Members Present: Tyler Carlton (chair), Amy Stewart, Gabriel Yeager, Andrew Boucher, Elizabeth McGovern, Lynne Mullen Staff Present: Dominick Pangallo 1. Call to Order: 6:30 p.m. 2. Approval of May 9, 2022 minutes: Approved unanimously with one abstention due to absence from the May 9th meeting (5-0-1) 3. Financial Updates: Education Fund Scholarship Fund May receipts: $81.04 May receipts: $131.58 June 1 balance: $7,716.83 Current balance: $9,006.89 4. Old Business a. Fundraising Updates: Tyler shared that the schedule to sign up for a slot at the Pride Festival is open and needs to be filled by committee members who can volunteer time. He also announced that ATG was sending a donation of $7,500 for the Scholarship Fund. b. Thank you letters process/policy: Discussion tabled to August meeting. c. Logo: Discussion tabled to August meeting. 5. New Business a. 2022 scholarship applications: The committee reviewed the 22 scholarship applications submitted by the May 31, 2022, application deadline. Members discussed how to approach incomplete applications and the total award amount to budget from the fund. Following that discussion the committee reviewed the individual applications and evaluated financial need and extenuating circumstances to the extent they were identifiable. On a motion made by Amy and seconded by Gabriel, the committee approved unanimously (6-0) awarding $500 scholarships to Annaiz Yasmin Capellan, Alexa Friedman Carr, Emily Dodge, Remily Gonzalez, Madison Lane, Princesa Paredes, Norelys Mendez Rivas, Jayren Romero, Leena Sarhan, Anastasia Stavropoulos, Breanna Stead, and Sicario Wilcock. Dominick indicated that he would send out the notification letters to all applicants and prepare a press release announcing the awards. b. 2023 scholarship application form: The committee discussed modifications to the scholarship application form for future rounds, including: (1) asking for clarification if an applicant did or did not apply for FAFSA while also indicating that it is informational only and not a requirement or criteria for a grant, (2) adding language indicating how applicants can contact staff or the committee for additional information or if they have questions about the application form, and (3) adding a space for applicants to specify any extenuating circumstances particular to their situation. c. 2023 fall Education Fund grant round: Discussion to be added to August meeting agenda. 6. CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Kimberley Driscoll Mayor Scholarship & Education Committee Monday, June 13, 2022 6:30 p.m. Pursuant to Chapter 20 of the Acts of 2021 and Chapter 22 of the Acts of 2022, this meeting of the Salem Scholarship & Education Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest extent possible. If any public comment is permitted, members of the public who have “raised their hand” in Zoom will be called on by the chair to offer comment. No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via technological means.
