Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes
Monday, December 12, 2022, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Members Present: Liz McGovern, Gabriel Yeager, Tyler Carlton, Heather Lang, Lynne Mullen, Brian

1. Call to Order: 6:30 p.m.
2. Approval of November 14, 2022 minutes: Approved 4-0-2
3. Financial Updates:
Education Fund Scholarship Fund
November receipts: $171.00 November receipts: $7,787.00

4. Old Business
a. Fundraising Updates: ATG donation was deposited.
5. New Business
a. Logo contest: Lynne will send a message to the district art teachers inviting their students
to participate. Heather suggested using the logo design on merchandise to sell for
fundraising.
b. Review and vote on Education Fund grant applications: The committee determined that
one of the five requests (Salem Ota Cultural Exchange) did not meet the criteria for the
grant program. They also wanted additional information about one application seeking
funds for a partnership program with Salem Sound Coastwatch (Bentley Academy
Innovation School) as it seemed like grant funds were being requested for stipends, which
is not an eligible use. On a motion by Liz, seconded by Heather, the committee voted 6-0
to approve grant awards to:
Salem YMCA ($1,000) to purchase games and materials for social/emotional learning
supports for their school-age programs serving 259 Salem students
Salem Public Schools’ early childhood program ($808) for books and equipment for
water tables and sensory play activities serving 194 preschool and pre-K students at
ECC, Horace Mann, and Bates schools
House of the Seven Gables ($500) for software, books, and supplies for the
organization’s adult ESL classes serving 40 Salem residents.
Dominick shared that the Education Fund has received $1,822 in donations this calendar
year to date, meaning the $2,308 in grants leaves the committee with a fundraising goal for
the Education Fund of $486 for December if they wish to have no net loss of funds in the
account this year.
c. Fundraising: Heather shared some preliminary concepts for additional fundraising
activities that the committee could pursue. The group decided to dedicate part of its agenda
at the January meeting on a deeper discussion about fundraising strategies and activities for
the new year.
d. Chair: Tyler announced that he is stepping down as the committee chair at the end of the
year and invited members to consider taking on the role. The committee will vote on a new
chair at the January meeting.

members of the public dialing in may press “*9” to raise their hand to speak.
No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be
made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via
technological means. In the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post
on the city’s website an audio or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of
proceedings as soon as possible after the meeting.
