Salem Public Schools AD-HOC SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH SUBCOMMITTEE Virtual Meeting April 9, 2026 Minutes Members In Attendance: AJ Hoffman - Chair, Veronica Miranda and Yamily Byas Member/s Absent: None Others In Attendance: Mary E Aicardi - Edward J. Collins, Jr. Center for Public Management Call of Meeting to Order Chair Hoffman called the meeting to order at 6:01 pm. Approval of Regular Session Minutes of March 25, 2026 Member Miranda made the motion to approve the minutes of March 25, 2026. Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. Member Byas voted YES Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman voted YES Motion passed unanimously. Executive Session Member Miranda made the motion to enter into Executive Session at 6:02 pm. Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. Member Byas voted YES Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman voted YES Motion passed unanimously. The Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee members returned to the regular session at 8:31 pm. Vote on Superintendent Screening Committee Candidates to School Committee Member Miranda made the motion to recommend the following Superintendent Screening Committee candidates to the School Committee: Yamily Byas AJ Hoffman Veronica Miranda Jenelle Gibney Monieke McNeil Nikki Whittaker Leveille McClain Elisa Castillo Juan Encarnacion Robin LoConte Tia Brown Laura Assade Lola Rawley Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. Member Byas voted YES Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman voted YES Motion passed unanimously. Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee Dissolvement and Approval of Final Minutes It was noted that the School Committee docket for April 13, 2026 has the agenda item for dissolving the Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee. The Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee tentatively scheduled the kick-off of the first Superintendent Screening Committee meeting to take place on Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 pm. Member Miranda made the motion to approve the April 9, 2026 regular session minutes of the Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee. Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. Member Byas voted YES Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman voted YES Motion passed unanimously. Adjournment Member Miranda made a motion to adjourn at 8:50 pm. Member Byas seconded. Collins, Jr. Center for Public Management Call of Meeting to Order Chair Hoffman called the meeting to order at 5:03 pm. T R Approval of Regular Session Minutes of March 19, 2026 Member Miranda made the motion to approve the minutes of March 19, 2026. Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. AF Member Byas voted YES Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman voted YES Motion passed unanimously. Discuss Memo Dated March 23, 2026 from Collins Center Project Team It was confirmed that the Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee would select the Screening Committee members and recommend them to the School Committee. The School Committee will appoint the members. The posting for the job vacancy was done on march 24, 2026. Collins Center representative D noted that this is the first time that the position has been translated into other languages in 17 years. Discuss and Vote on Composition of Screening Committee Chair Hoffman mentioned that they would prefer 9 people on the Superintendent Screening Committee which would include two School Committee members, educators, caregivers, a student and a community member. One of the Collins Center representatives mentioned that there may be some pushback if there are more caregivers than staff on the committee. Collins Center representatives suggested that the Superintendent Screening Committee should reflect the demographics of Salem Public Schools. Timeline Update Chair Hoffman commented that the Ad-Hoc Superintendent Search Subcommittee would be dissolved once the Superintendent Screening Committee members are selected. The subcommittee members acknowledged that the timeline may need to shift a little bit in order to allow more time for volunteers to apply for the Superintendent Screening Committee. The Google form for the invitation to apply for the Superintendent Screening Committee will be translated into Spanish and Portuguese, and posted by the end of the week. The subcommittee noted that the kick-off meeting for the Superintendent Screening Committee should take place prior to April vacation. Member Miranda suggested that Member Byas work with the Collins Center representative on the Google form for the Superintendent Screening Committee application. Chair Hoffman and Member Miranda agreed that they would provide their edits individually to the Collins Center representative, Mary Aicardi. Chair Hoffman left the meeting at 6:13 pm. T Member Miranda made the motion to authorize Member Byas to work on the Superintendent R Screening Committee application with Collins Center representative, Mary Aicardi. Member Byas seconded. A roll call vote was taken. Member Byas voted YES AF Member Miranda voted YES Chair Hoffman ABSENT Motion passed with 2 votes in favor and 1 absent. Next Steps The next meeting would be held on the following week to discuss the selection of the Superintendent Screening Committee members.
