Receive a Staff updated regarding the San Marcos River Shared Use Pathway Project: • Assistant Director Jamie Lee Case: Project is complete (pictures of project are shared with Board). • The canopy has been installed at the railroad trestle between Children’s Park and Rio Vista Park to prevent objects falling onto those walking on path. An additional apparatus will be installed to prevent people from using canopy as a diving board into river. • The Mural Commission will be working to have something painted in the area under the trestle. Only stipulation from railroad is that it has to be a railroad safety related painting. REPORTS 4. Staff suspended memberships and took steps to relocate, reschedule or cancel events. • Members of the Activity Center are being informed of a possible opening date in April of 2022. Activity Center staff continues to respond to all questions and request for updates. • Latest Update on Activity Center: Our restoration company is currently painting and installing carpet. Gym floors are being shipped and will need to be installed after being acclimated to our climate. We are anticipating a possible opening date the month of April 2022. For the month of January, they have also continued with assisting at the Police Department and Discovery Center, along with helping at the Animal Shelter and Resource Recovery. The guards completed their one hour of in-service every week. • Total Wellness released their new Spring semester schedule for this year. Once the Activity Center reopens, they will be able to resume classes normally including H2O+ at the pool. Texas State University is still allowing Total Wellness to continue their classes at the Jowers Center on campus. Total Wellness is also doing outdoor classes at City Park while the weather permits. • Rio Vista Pool has had some issues this month. There was a drainage issue where the sensor was not triggering the autofill to shut off, but it has been fixed. Then, one of our pumps is not intaking water which we believe is a motor malfunction. Progressive Commercial Aquatics will be looking at the issue soon. Katz. This story can be viewed on the Virginia Witte Way trail in Schulle Canyon Natural area. This story features illustrations for each month of the year with fun colors and shapes by Eiko Ojala and will be on the trail from now until the end of February! Holiday Camp Youth services hosted Holiday Camp from December 27-30 and the final day was on January 3rd. Registration for camp was full, with 25 kids registered for each of the 5 camp days. (Fig 1). Non-native species removed were Hydrilla and Hygrophila. We performed several maintenance sweep dives that targeted any emerging Hydrilla and Hygrophila in cleared areas and around TWR stands. We observed natural expansion of Potamogeton, Sagittaria, Cabomba and Ludwigia in Spring Lake, the Spring Lake dam reach, Sewell Park, below Sewell Park, in the City Park reach, lower City Park, below Hopkins Street and in the Bicentennial Park Reach. We currently have 2,499 plants in the Texas State raceways (Fig. 2). We removed Hydrilla and Hygrophila from within and around multiple TWR stands from the Spring Lake Dam Reach to Snake Island. TWR has rebounded well in areas of high recreation. TWR seedlings and other natives are colonizing areas treated for Hydrilla and Hygrophila. We continue to observe a loss of TWR plants in the upper section of the Western spillway of Spring Lake. Texas wild rice planting from seed  CITY OF SAN MARCOS/TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY EAHCP PROGRESS REPORT December 2021 We are starting a new round of seedling planting in the outdoor raceways. Setting up multiple grow out containers for different seedling growth stages has been very successful. We’ve moved all our seedling production to the outdoor raceways. The vegetation mats were composed of 95% Ceratophyllum demersum, 2% Hygrophila, 1% Ceratopteris and 2% TWR fragments. Most of these vegetation mats were suspended on TWR stands. We have observed an increase in TWR fragments in the vegetation mats with the increase in recreation. Removed materials created effective berms along the contours of the slopes. Also removed all of the remaining Confetti Lantana, 4 o’clocks and Golden bamboo. Continued work on eliminating all of the non-native grasses and made good progress. Removing grass seed and treating all these non-native grasses took the bulk of the time this month. We killed all of the Johnson Grass, and in the areas where it was the thickest, we removed these dead grasses to prep the sites for seeding by volunteers. The soil needs access to sunlight in order for the seeds to grow. Johnson Grass was growing sporadically throughout the park. There were two to four very large stands (~500-1000ft2) and about ten medium sized stands (~50-200ft2) of Johnson Grass that we treated and removed from the ground after it died out. The KR bluestem and Bermuda were also growing heavily in different areas throughout the park. For sections that had thick Bermuda growth, and underwent treatment, the thatch that remained after death had to be raked up and hauled off. During 2022, Sessom Creek should be monitored and we will eventually need to return for regrowth. Also, it would be very helpful if Vie Apartments allowed a contractor to remove the non-native species that remain on the left-hand side of the creek. There are many seed- bearing, non-native trees that will cause problems down the line. With that, we have moved out of Sessom Creek Park to concentrate on Willow Creek removals and treatments in 2022.
