Smith, At-large Wednesday, October 5, 2016 9:00 AM Mayor's Conference Room 9:00 The City Council and Mayor will meet in the Mayor's Conference Room to discuss general City issues. Roll Call Present: 6- Council Member Scott Cowdell Council Member Maren Barker Council Member Chris McCandless Council Member Steve Fairbanks Council Member Linda Martinez Saville Council Member Stephen P. Smith Absent: 1- Council Member Kristin Coleman-Nicholl Also Present Administration: Mayor Tom Dolan CAO Byron Jorgenson Mayor's Office Manager Chris Edwards Sandy City Resident Steve Van Maren The meeting commenced at 9:21 a.m. The meeting opened with a discussion between the City Council and Mayor Dolan regarding their working relationship and their ability to work together. All agreed that communication between the City Council and Administration is essential to a good working relationship. They discussed the importance of informal and formal lines of communication. The Council members spoke about recognizing that each City Council member brings a unique perspective and style to the meetings and the importance of embracing and respecting those differences. Sandy City, Utah Page 1 Printed on 10/27/2016 City Council Meeting Minutes October 5, 2016 There was discussion about the tension among the City Council members and the City Administrative Staff and they discussed ways to alleviate the tension. The Council members stressed the importance of receiving timely, complete information well in-advance - which will help them more effectively prepare for Council meetings. They discussed scheduling future meetings to allow for more discussion time with Administration and department heads. The City Council recognized that the City has a great deal going on right now and that has added to the anxiety. They know how hard the City staff is working and they appreciate their efforts. They discussed hiring an analyst to assist Mike Applegarth. In closing, the Council discussed interpersonal relationships and the need to work together as a team. ______________________ ______________________ Stephen P.
