BE IT ENACTED by the Council of the City of Schenectady, in regular meeting convened, as follows: Chapter 186.16 Fires; smoking not permitted in City parks pavilions, fields and playgrounds. [Amended 6-2-1986 by L.L No. 3-1986; 4-26-2010 by Ord. No. 2010-08; 6-28-2010 by Ord. No. 2010-12] A. No person other than City employees shall light, make or use any fire in any park except for cooking food in containers suitable for outdoor cooking. B. No person shall smoke within the City's parks. pavilions, fields and playgrounds. For purposes of this section, "to smoke" means to burn a lighted cigar, cigarette, or pipe, or to use any other matter or substance which contains tobacco. C. CORPORATION COUNSEL G ARDEN N OTES 2007 The deteriorated Spring Pond was renovated and by mid- summer was a new favorite photo spot for visitors to the garden. You can easily see why! Many changes took place this year, here are a few of the new additions to the Garden. Early in the Spring, five new comfortable benches were added to enjoy view- ing the garden and more to come soon! Our sprinkler system was updated and improved this year to keep our roses wonderfully blooming all season, well into October.  Through the generosity of the Schenectady G ARDEN N OTES 2008 Foundation, the William G. Broughton Foun- dation, The Wright Family Foundation, the Carlilian Foundation, NYS Senator Farley, Assemblyman Tedisco and Assemblyman Amedore, Festa Italiana and many others, the Rose Garden Restoration Committee has been able to raise over $150,000 for the construc- tion of a grand staircase and gatehouse. This phase of the master plan is to be completed by the Spring of 2009. In September a ground breaking ceremony was held to start construction on our Gate House and Grand Staircase project which, was well attended by local officials, our funding patrons and board members and, was well received & publicized in the local Just a few updates media. as to what has been happening in the Garden this past year. Almost Complete Since December 2008, many people won- dered all winter what was taking place in the garden hidden from view in the mys- terious plastic shelter. Now this Spring finally coming to light is the Grand Staircase and Gate House through metamorphosis it has exited it’s winter cocoon. Check out our newly Redesigned Website at www.schenectadyrose.com  During the Winter of 2009, the plastic tent Garden Notes 2010 that peaked curiosity among our neighbors as it covered the front section of our garden came down this past Spring, to reveal the new Grand Staircase and Gatehouse. The Stairway now provides an inviting entrance to the garden which had not previously ex- isted from Central Parkway. The Gatehouse provides a formal-- yet whimsical— architectural element, while also serving a very practical role for equipment storage and also houses the garden’s electrical and irrigation systems. Photos: Jim Kalohn The Staircase and Gatehouse were proudly on display for our Annual Fundraiser held June 14th to commemorate the 50th Anniver- sary of the Garden. Over 200 guests strolled among 4000 magnificent rose What’s new in bushes in full bloom, serenaded by harp music. Guests enjoyed a delicious brunch beneath a magnificent blue sky and brilliant the garden sunshine. As in past years, many busi- nesses, community partners and friends generously supported us. Our next major project is on track to add a new water feature to the garden in the form of a Center Fountain. We hope to begin construction in 2010-2011. On this particular Tuesday evening in 2009, a passing visitor took this photo of a few of our volunteer gardeners, and sent it to us. Our volunteers love working in the garden, as you can tell from their smiling faces. Call Dave Gade @ 355-5798  Center Fountain Project is Under Way G ARDEN N OTES 2011 To our good fortune, several generous donors and grants that the Rose Garden Restoration Committee (RGRC) received in 2010 placed us in a very good position to begin the design process for the Center Fountain project. We have chosen a classic black marble fountain that will coordinate with other re- cent additions to the garden. The photo rendering to the left shows how the fountain might appear once constructed. We are in the process of finalizing the remaining details and are still looking for additional donors, but we hope the fountain will be in place for our, Annual Garden Party, scheduled for Proposed Center Fountain for the Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 12 noon. Central Park Rose Garden If you would like to make a donation to our fountain project, please go to What’s New in www.schenectadyrose.com and follow links to “Donate” or “Contact” us for more information. the Garden Back in April of 2010 we thought it might be fun to join other All America Rose Selection (AARS) Rose Garden’s across the U.S. and enter their contest to see who would become “America’s Best Rose Garden”. We really had no expectation of winning this contest, but though we have nothing to lose, but try our best. So with bookmarks, and emails and word of mouth we contacted people to VOTE for our rose garden, we are all so proud of. Little did we realize how many of our friends, and their friends, and a whole lot of other people voted for us. Amazingly in July 2010 we became one of the top 10 finalists. Then much to our astonishment in August, we were awarded 3rd Place garden among the three top finalists. The RGRC would like to thank the many people who voted for us, including our volunteers, gardeners and the community who have supported us these past 15 years. We can all share in this proud recogni- tion of our accomplishments to restore Schenectady’s Central Park Rose Garden. Central Park Rose Garden Begins testing EarthKind Roses In the spring of 2010, the RGRC decided to participate in a multi-year trial with eight other northern zone rose gardens working with Texas A&M Agri Life Extension Service to test roses and qualify for them for EarthKind™ status. The EarthKind™ program is designed to identify and test roses which can survive low maintenance & earth friendly practices. These roses must be able to grow in a variety of soils, be pest tolerant, hardy to heat/cold and also be drought tolerant. This is a most unique oppor- tunity for the Central Park rose garden to feature EarthKind™ roses, as well as be involved in this new agricultural technology and testing program. If you would like more info on EarthKind roses go to: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkind/roses/ Or contact Dave Gade our Garden Operation Supervisor at 355-5798  Center Fountain a “Grand” New Addition G ARDEN N OTES 2012 The 14’ high black marble fountain surrounded by a red brick paved terrace immediately began drawing visitors to see this new addition to the rose garden. They came to pose & take photos all day and into the night, when the fountain is illuminated and the water sparkles in the twilight. Many people have commented how well the fountain fits into the garden. We certainly agree and would like to thank, Mary Moore Wallinger our landscape archi- tect, Synthesis LLP and Surroundings Landscape & Design, for their design, guidance and tremendous help to construct another piece of our Master Plan to restore and improve the rose garden. On Saturday, June 18, 2011, under bright sunny skies the Center Fountain was dedicated in the rose garden in memory of Katie Lynch a young woman of 31, whose life was cut too short after losing her battle with leukemia. Many of her friends, family and colleagues came out to celebrate her life as the glistening water cascaded over the lovely new fountain named in her honor, as they remembered the gentle soul of this woman who inspired and touched all the people she met. It was a beautiful day shared by all those who attended our annual rose garden fundraiser. Save the Date: Friday, June 22, 2011 - 6 to 9 pm at the River Stone Manor, Glenville, NY New Center Fountain amidst the peak Our 17th Annual Garden Party, will be a special tropical burst of blooms this past June themed evening of fun and surprises! What’s New in the Garden Garden Entry Kiosk finally takes its place on the Iroquois Way garden entrance After many years of planning what was to be our first Master Plan project finally took its place in the garden within days after the Center Fountain’s completion. The three sided kiosk placed at the garden entrance on Iroquois Way beckons visitors from Central Park to stop and smell the roses. Each panel on the kiosk contains information about the formation of the Rose Garden Restoration Committee, our Master Plan, History of the Rose Gar- den, Contributors to our first fundraising efforts and a Map of Central Park with Rules of Etiquette for visitors to follow when enjoying their visit to the rose garden. The Kiosk with it bright red rose imaged panels placed on a black wrought iron styled structure, ties well with other recent new additions to the garden such as the benches, fencing and also our new black marble center fountain. RGRC receives “Good News Award” from the Chamber of Schenectady County On April 23, 2011 the Rose Garden Restoration Committee was awarded a “Good News Awards” from the Chamber of Schenectady County at their annu- al awards luncheon. The awards recognized businesses or organizations whose story and community involvement makes Schenectady County a great place to live, work and play, yet whose stories remain untold.
