Public taw 90-498, approved on September 17,1968, authorized President Lyndon Johnson and formally requested that he annually designate the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The designation to include the specific dates of September 15 and 16 was to coincide with the anniversaq of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua on September 15, and the independence of Mexico on September 16.
