In 1936 Fr. Keane, after much thoughtful prayer and consideration,
decided to build a new church. The basement church no longer
sufficed. On Easter Sunday, April 12, 1936, the last Mass was said in
the basement church. The parish moved temporarily to the parish
hall which was remodeled into a temporary Chapel. On July 26,1936
the cornerstone of the new church was laid while hundreds of peo-
ple, parishioners and other members of the community, gathered
along State Street between Furman and Division Streets.
On February 7, 1937 his Excellency, the Most Rev. Edmund F Gib-
bons, dedicated the new church at 11 AM. A Solemn High Mass,
celebrated by the Rev. William C Keane, followed the dedication.
That's the history of our beginnings here at St. Luke's. Our historical
roots are important. Our history shows us that St. luke's was an
integral part of the larger community since its very beginning. But
our story doesn't end with the new building.
St. luke's parish is culturally, economically and socially diverse. Our
vision calls us to be welcoming and to treat all of God's people with
dignity and respect. aUf story is one of hope amidst the challenges
of life. We invite you to become a part of our shared story and
history.
