A Resolution Reaffirming Schenectady’s Values of Inclusion, Respect, and Justice, and the City’s
Commitment to Reinforce These Values; Calling on President Donald Trump to Condemn Recent Attacks
and Hate Speech
WHEREAS, the United States was founded on the ideals stated in the Declaration of Independence with
the unalienable rights of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, freedoms for all Americans are guaranteed in the Constitution of the United States; and
WHEREAS, racism is defined as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and
capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race; and
WHEREAS, there has risen in the United States a growing threat to political stability and justice that
seeks to reignite social animosities, reverse improvements in race relations, divide our people, and
provoke hatred, classism, and ethnic cleansing; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution and laws of the United States and the State of New York, and the Charter
and laws of the City of Schenectady do not support in any way act of bigotry, sexism, or racism;
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SCHENECTADY, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT,
the City of Schenectady is proud of its cultural diversity and rejects retrograde ideologies, violence,
hateful speech, and racial bigotry that seeks to destabilize our nation, society, government, and infect
our political system, and calls upon President Donald Trump and all Federal and State elected officials to
publicly denounce this scourge to society.
