1 2 AD HOC GREEN TIER LEGACY COMMUNITY COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES 3 Thursday, November 14, 2024 4 5 6 The November 14, 2024 meeting of the Green Tier Legacy Community Committee did not have 7 a quorum and therefore could not conduct a formal meeting. Those present included 8 committee members Kurt Harff and Mary Smythe, Village Administrator Julie Schmelzer and 9 Clerk Heidi Teich, and guest Laurel Harff. 10 11 The committee has been working on the need for plastic bag recycling in Northern Door. 12 Schmelzer contacted Jeff Johnson, Going Garbage, about the possibility of opening a plastics 13 baling facility in Sister Bay. Johnson toured a similar facility in Minnesota and concluded that 14 his company does not have the space to house the necessary equipment, nor would the northern 15 Door area produce enough plastic material to make this a practical investment for his company. 16 17 Schmelzer also toured Merrick, Inc., a curative rehab facility in Parkland, WI, which has a 18 plastics recycling facility. She subsequently reached out to Patrick Voight, one of Sister Bay’s 19 County Board Supervisors who serves on the Land and Water Commission, to ask if the County 20 would be willing to explore a plastics recycling facility County-wide. This partnership could 21 involve the Sunshine House, whose clients could serve as the workforce, and Josh Van Lieshout, 22 owner of the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park, who could be asked to donate land if a facility were 23 to be built. Finally, she contacted the Door County Economic Development Corporation who 24 works with the businesses in the industrial park to explore whether anyone would have 25 available space in an existing facility that could be utilized. 26 27 More updates will come as Schmelzer hears back from her contacts. Smythe noted that GTLC 28 of Door County and the Climate Change Coalition would also be advocates for this type of 29 program. 30 31 Respectfully submitted, 32 33 Heidi Teich, 34 Village Clerk
