Board of Zoning Appeals

The Smithfield Board of Zoning Appeals held its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 15th, 2022. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. Members present: Gregory Brown – Chairman Tristan Barnes– Vice Chair Faye Seeley Members absent: Gene Monroe Christopher Gwaltney Staff present: Tammie Clary – Community Development & Planning Director William H. Riddick III - Town Attorney Russell Hill – Board of Historic and Architectural Review Press: 0 Citizens: 6 Chairman Brown called the meeting to order. The Town Attorney reported that there was a matter that had been advertised for public hearing concerning Lot 182A Riverview Avenue (TPIN:21A-01-182A) and the applicants were present. He pointed out that there were not enough members of the Board present and they did not have a quorum. He recommended that the matter be continued until Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:30 pm as the applicant and members of the public present who had wanted to speak could be informed of the change. He stated that the other members not present would be contacted and he apologized to the members of the public who were present. He speculated that the members would not be coming this evening as it was already 40 minutes past when the start of the meeting had been scheduled. Chairman Brown agreed, stating that they could not legally go on without a quorum present. The Town Attorney asked Vice Chair Seeley if she would be willing to make a motion to continue the meeting until next Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm. Vice Chair Seeley made the motion to continue the meeting next Tuesday, March 22nd, at 6:30 pm. Chairman Brown seconded the motion. The Town Attorney reiterated that the Chairman was able to proceed in this way, and that business could not be transacted without a third member. Chairman Brown addressed the applicants and any interested parties, stating that the meeting would be continued until next Tuesday at 6:30 pm. He added that they would contact the other members of the Board to ensure that a quorum was present at that time and apologized to all present.
