STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, May 7, 2019 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, SHTV Studio Members Present: Ron Bindle, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Steve Couchman, Grace Finazzo, Judith Foley, Gary Lusk, Wendy Popko, Jeanne Schabath, and Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: Larry Farhat and Mona Yassine Representing the City: Sue Giallombardo Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the April 3, 2018 Art Commission made by Farhat. Seconded by: Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS: A. Memorial Day Parade  Giallombardo asked members to volunteer if they are available to help at the ceremony and the parade. Bindle asked if volunteers could be given a complete lists of all parade participants. Lusk volunteered to take photos at the ceremony and parade.  Schabath reminded members that they will be voting on best bands and best floats. SHTV will produce a video and Giallombardo will have video of the bands and photos of the floats at the June meeting.  Bindle asked that band leaders be asked to arrive on time. Some bands arrived very late to last year's parade. B. Art Commission Projects  Giallombardo stated that Bridget Kozlowski will be resigning from the City later in the month and was unable to attend the meeting. In the interim, until a new Community Relations Director is hired, Giallombardo will try to keep up with pending projects. This includes following up with the mosaic tile project and the business mural project. C. Sterlingfest Art & Music Fair  Members of the Arts Commission juried in artwork for Sterlingfest 2019. Members discussed multiple changes to the artist qualifications and guidelines. Topics of discussion included the following:  Food vendors display a sign "Approved by Macomb County Health Dept."  Henna artist certification (?)  Include a signed statement that items are hand-crafted  Food vendors do not need to be juried  Accept artists first, then have a lottery for remaining applicants  Separate food vendors from artists/crafters  The application will be reviewed by all members and discussed at the September 2019 meeting. OLD BUSINESS:  Giallombardo stated that Parks & Recreation is taking over the coordination of the Sterlingfast 5K; with the help and support of Community Relations. Arts Commission members are welcome to volunteer for the event. Schabath stated that she will try to secure donation items for the winners. NEW BUSINESS:  Couchman said that he is a tenant at the Velocity building (on 18 Mile, near DPW) and would like to give a 'tilt brush' demonstration to the Arts Commission, from his office, possibly at the June meeting. Giallombardo will follow-up and coordinate. Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m. NEXT ART COMMISSION MEETING: Tuesday, June 4 at 6 p.m.
