STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, January 7 , 2020 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Ro ad, Sterling Height s, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: David Bollman, Ron Bindle, Jan Burns, Steve Couchman, Lawrence Farhat, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine and Stacy Ziarko. Members Absent: Grace Finazzo, Judith Foley, Gary Lusk and Wendy Popko Representing the City: Melanie Davis and Sue Giallombardo Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the November 6, 2019 Art Commission made by Couchman; Seconded by: Yassine Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS: A. Election of 2020 Officers (Chair & Vice Chair)  Giallombardo asked for nominations for Chair and Vice Chair. Couchman made a motion to nominate Schabath for Chair and Ziarko for Vice Chair, seconded by Yassine. Ayes: All Nays: None B. Featured Artist  Giallombardo shared the artwork and background for potential Featured Artist, Cameron Jenkins. Jenkins lives in Farmington Hills; Jenkins does drawing, painting, sculpting and digital art. Giallombardo stated that she sent Phil Gilchrist from Anton Art Center the details for applying for Featured Artist. Ziarko made a motion to accept Callens as a Featured Artist; Seconded by Couchman. Ayes: all Nays: none  Giallombardo will send congratulations letter and arrange SHTV interview. C. Memorial Day Parade Theme  Giallombardo reminded members that Sharron Allen has accepted the honor of serving as Grand Marshal; and asked members to decide on a parade theme. Suggestions were made for Medals of Honor, Symbols of Honor, Love & Honor and Music in the Military. Ziarko made a motion for the theme to be “Valor”; Seconded by Farhat. Ayes: all Nays: none  Giallombardo will include the following definition of valor on the parade application: great courage in the face of danger, and will also highlight the requirement of highlighting the theme when entering a float in the parade. D. 2020 Art Projects  Giallombardo stated that Kyle Langlois would like to hold-off on the mosaic tile project at the new Community Center until after the center’s grand opening. The grade opening will be held on February 29th, 2020.  Ziarko stated that she took a class instructed by Mary Gilhuly and said that she was very organized and she set everyone up nicely for the project. Ziarko added that she is confident in Mary’s ability to create, design and install a successful project, with allowing the public to participate as well. Giallombardo added that Kyle Langlois will like for Mary to be the sole artist for the piece being installed in the main meeting room, but would like Mary to work with residents on a project to be installed in a location on the second floor of the center. OLD BUSINESS:  Bollman stated that he would like to meet with Kyle Langlois in the near future to discuss his sculpture project ideas. Bollman envisions silhouette figures as the base, with four quadrants around the base with a nature-related theme. He will submit more definitive ideas and sketches. He discussed the possibility of working with Steve Couchman and 3-D software on the design.  Members decided on the photo contest themes for the next three months to be as follows: o February – Love o March – Luck o April – Spring  Members asked if the contest is being promoted on social media and the city’s website. Giallombardo stated that it is, several times throughout the month. The city’s Digital Content Coordinator will continue to promote the contest. Giallombardo will send links to future posts to members that don’t follow the city on social media, and will promote the contest in the next city magazine as well.  Giallombardo will place the order for business cards for members. NEW BUSINESS :  None Meeting adjourned: 7:00 p.m. NEXT ARTS COMMISSION MEETING: Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 6 p.m.
