STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, November 1 , 2022 Meeting Locatio n: City Hall, Conference Room 028 Members Present: Jan Burns, Barbara Chudzik, Gary Lusk, Sheri Marwede, Wendy Popko, Krystina Richardson and Jeanne Schabath-Lewis, Lisa Stout and Elizabeth Vincent. Members Absent: Ron Bindle, Patrick Michalski and Zachary Overman Representing the City: Sue Giallombardo, Community Relations Specialist Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. The newest members introduced herself:  Lisa Stout has been a resident of Sterling Heights for three years, she’s gone through the Police and Fire Citizens Academy, and looks forward to being on the Arts Commission. She is a critic for area restaurants and businesses, and administers a “sell your stuff” facebook group. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the minutes of the October 4, 2022 Arts Commission meeting, as amended; motion made by Popko; Seconded by: Richardson Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS: A. Public Art Projects  Giallombardo asked members to come up with some short term, low cost public art ideas. She added that the mosaic tile mural is moving forward, and work should begin on that in early January, once City Council gives final approval. Giallombardo stated that the memorial sculptures will be installed soon, and then we will have a better idea of funds available for upcoming projects.  Schabath-Lewis stated that Councilman Yanez would like to see a memorial dedicated to the military that fought in the Iraq/Afghanistan war. Giallombardo said that she would look into that.  Schabath-Lewis said that there is going to be a Marvel-themed Tiny Art exhibit at the library, on November 15. The display will feature canvas paintings.  Giallombardo stated that a Girl Scout troop would like to paint rocks for the rock garden at the library. She will coordinate in the Spring.  Popko followed up regarding the American Eagle sculpture. Since winning the Grand Rapids Art Prize, the artist raised the sale price drastically. Lusk suggested holding a community fund raiser if we wanted to consider purchasing the sculpture. Giallombardo stated that public art is already funded by the tax payers, adding that a fundraiser might not be well-received.  Giallombardo stated that ideas could be shared at future meetings. OLD BUSINESS:  Giallombardo stated that there are available kits for any members wanted to stencil the storm drains in their neighborhood. Each install only takes about 15 minutes. Follow up with Giallombardo if interested.   Schabath-Lewis asked about the Arts Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation, and the amount that is available for spending. Giallombardo stated an amount of approximately $700, which Schabath-Lewis replied was way too low, Giallombardo will contact the board members and get exact details for the January meeting.  Giallombardo stated that past locations for mural installations are still being considered, and will hopefully happen this year. Locations to consider are Zap Zone, Burlington Coat Factory and the empty building that used to be Munro Muffler on Utica Road at Van Dyke. Members stated that they’d like to see murals outside of City Center.  Schabath-Lewis suggested teaming with the County for a mural somewhere along Mound Road. NEW BUSINESS :  Giallombardo stated City Council asked that each Board or Commission give a presentation at a future Council meeting, typically the Chairperson shares the goals of the commission, Schabath-Lewis agreed to present at the Jan. 3rd City Council meeting, immediately following the January meeting. Members are welcome to attend to meeting to support.  Giallombardo stated that the members typically hold a Christmas party at someone’s house, or at a restaurant, in lieu of the regular December meeting, on Tuesday, December 6th. Lusk offered to host the party again. Members will bring a dish, and beverage of their choice. Giallombardo offered to send out invitations on his behalf. Lusk asked her to extend the invite to City Council, Giallombardo stated that there will be a Council meeting that evening.  Giallombardo shared samples of a pontential Featured Artist, for February & March. Artist was approved, Giallombardo will send an invite when he sets up his display and gets interviewed by SHTV. NEXT ARTS COMMISSION MEETING: Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023 at 6 p.m.
