STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, June 6, 2023 Meeting Locatio n: City Hall, Conference Room 028 Members Present: Barbara Chudzik, Sheri Marwede, Patrick Michalski, Krystina O’Toole, Lisa Stout and Elizabeth Vincent Members Absent: Ron Bindle, Jan Burns, Zachary Overman, Wendy Popko and Jeanne Schabath-Lewis Representing the City: Sue Giallombardo, Community Relations Specialist Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the minutes of the May 2, 2023 Arts Commission meeting; motion made by O’Toole; Seconded by: Chudzik Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Memorial Day Parade Recap  Giallombardo thanked all of the commission members that volunteered their time. She added that Schabath-Lewis did a great job as MC during the ceremony, and said that the Tuskegee flyover was a huge success. The flyover occurred around 9:30 a.m., just as the Grand Marshal was finishing his speech. Giallombardo added that the fly-over was funded with sponsorship money.  Giallombardo stated that after sending out “Friends of the Parade” donation letters, approximately $23,000 was contributed towards the parade, and will carry-over for future parades.  Giallombardo said that the parade went well and there seemed to be good crowds along Dodge Park Road. She added that she struggles getting Veteran groups to attend, and also said that were a few less Scout Troops this year.  Marwede asked how the staging went; Giallombardo said that there were the usual issues with lack of space for lining up, and groups showing up with more vehicles than stated on their application. O’Toole suggested sending a final e- mail to ask how many vehicles will be attending. B. Review of Parade Bands and Floats  Giallombardo stated that the following bands and floats were at the parade: PARADE BANDS o 1ST MICHIGAN COLONIAL FIFE & DRUM CORP o STERLING HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL o MOSLEM SHRINERS o COUSINO HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND o CHANDLER PARK ACADEMY "SONIC BLUE" MARCHING BAND o ECORSE MIGHTY MARCHING RAIDERS PARADE FLOATS o MOSLEM SHRINERS  o AMERICAN POLISH CENTURY CLUB o USP4GG o GIRL SCOUTS OF SE MI, TROOP 76632 o ROMEO PEACH QUEEN  Giallombardo showed videos of the bands and photos of the floats. Commission members discussed each category and voted for their favorites.  Marwede made a motion to award Best Band to Chandler Park Academy, with Runner Up going to Sterling Heights High School; and to award Best Float to Troop 76632 and Runner Up going to the USP4GG organization. Giallombardo stated that she will mail congratulatory letters with plaques for the bands and checks for the floats. Best Float receives $200.00 and runner up receives $75.00. C. Sterlingfest  Giallombardo shared that she has 116 artists and 10 kid artists. She reminded members that they are welcome to volunteer to relieve artists for breaks, or sit at the Information Table.  Giallombardo said that voting sheets will be ready for pick up on Thursday morning of Sterlingfest, and said that members should turn in their picks for best artist by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The winners will be notified around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. She reminded members that the 1st place winner will be invited back next year at no cost, and the 2nd place winner will receive half off the booth fee.  Giallombardo asked members to let her know if any artist is selling items that might not have been approved during the jurying process. She suggested taking good notes to be shared for next year’s jurying process. D. Mural Submissions  Giallombardo shared the mural submissions for the Zap Zone wall, and stated that the initial call for murals was unsuccessful because none of the murals focused on the theme of inclusivity. She stated that the deadline is extended and Melanie Davis will ask those artists that submitted to re-submit potential murals. Giallombardo said that she would share the new submissions via e- mail again, since the commission doesn’t meet in July and August.  Chudzik like the panel concept that one artist used; O’Toole suggested a mural showing flowers from different countries; and also noted that since the location of the wall is a drive-by location, the mural needs to be easy to depict from the road. OLD BUSINESS:  Giallombardo stated that we are in need of Featured Artists, there are no guidelines regarding residency, the artist does not need to live in Sterling Heights.
