STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Monday, March 4, 2013 Chairman Wawrzyniak called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Commissioner’s present: Jennifer Abed, Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Jazmine Early, Jim Francis, Gary Isom, Darlene MacLeod, Sharon Mason, Theodora Netza, Ruthann Schinzing and Aaron Wawrzyniak Commissioner’s absent: Josh MacKinnon Other present: Steve Guitar, Community Relations Director Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve Beautification Commission meeting minutes from the January 7, 2013 meeting made by Darlene MacLeod. Seconded by: Henrietta Baczewski Ayes: all Nays: none Agenda Items: A. Snowman Contest Judging · Giallombardo displayed pictures of all 24 entries to the Snowman/Snow sculpture contest. Commission members picked their three favorites, with the top vote-getter winning the contest. The winning entry was submitted by Helen & Yanni Tsouroullis. Giallombardo will send out a letter inviting the family to attend the next meeting on April 1st to receive its award. B. Memorial Day Parade Participation · Wawrzyniak asked commission members if they would like to participate in the 2013 Memorial Day Parade. · Baczewski asked if the group would be making a float. · Wawrzyniak stated that he doesn’t have enough spare time to assist in building a float. · Duncan stated that he has a small John Deere tractor that could pull a small flatbed. · Giallombardo stated that there is not a specific theme to this year’s parade but that it’s the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. · Wawrzyniak stated that last year two members carried the banner and the group passed out seed packets. · Guitar stated that the seed packets were a donation from Waste Management and that we put in a request for this year’s parade but has not heard back yet. Last year they donated 2,000 packets. · If Waste Management is unable to donate seed packets, Giallombardo will send out letters to local greenhouses asking for donations. C. 2013 Plant Exchange · Wawrzyniak stated that the 2013 Plant Exchange will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 10 a.m. til noon. He reminded commission members that residents tend to get to the Nature Center early and start trading plants amongst themselves. He asked members to please try to attend and if so, try to get there a little early. · Wawrzyniak said that members do not need to know much about flowers, but just be present to socialize, walk around and chat with the residents. Old Business: · Wawrzyniak asked if there are any updates on the BCSEM luncheon to be held on September 26th. · Baczewski said no, and added that she will be meeting with Utica, Shelby and members of Community Relations soon. · Giallombardo asked if any members were planning on attending the SCSEM Luncheon on March 21 in Chesterfield. Baczewski, Duncan, Wawrzyniak and Mason stated that they would like to attend. · Giallombardo stated that members could pay for their tickets at the door and submit their receipt to her for reimbursement. · Giallombardo stated that the city’s Spring Pride & SHINE day will be held on Saturday, May 18th. Members are welcome to volunteer to help people with outdoor maintenance chores. If commission members know of any neighbors that are in need of some help, due to health issues, please forward their information along to Community Relations. New Business: · Baczewski shared a newspaper article saying the the Clinton River Watershed Council is looking for volunteers to help clean the banks and surrounding area of the Clinton River. The clean-ups take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. til noon. More information can be found on their website: www.crwc.org.
