STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
Monday, May 6, 2013
Chairman Aaron Wawrzyniak called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Commissioner’s present:
Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Jim Francis, Gary Isom, Josh MacKinnon, Darlene
MacLeod, Sharon Mason, Theodora Netza, Ruthann Schinzing and Aaron Wawrzyniak.
Commissioner’s absent:
Jennifer Abed and Jazmine Early
Other present:
Steve Guitar, Community Relations Director
Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist
Approval of Minutes:
Motion to approve Beautification Commission meeting minutes from the April 1, 2013 meeting
made by Francis.
Seconded by: Duncan Ayes: all Nays: none
Agenda Items:
A. Memorial Day Parade – Final wrap-up
· Wawrzyniak reported that the donated seed
packets were delivered from Waste Management;
committee members were asked to take packets
home and staple them to the Beautification
nomination flyers.
· Giallombardo stated that new aprons were ordered
and are available if members would like one to wear
to the plant exchange, parade, etc.
· Giallombardo added that there are also navy polo
shirts available for the parade, Sterlingfest, etc.
· Wawrzyniak said that he will be driving his red PT
Cruiser, members are invited to ride along or walk
the parade route.
· Giallombardo will bring the banner outside the morning
of the parade.
B. Sterlingfest Participation
· Wawrzyniak stated that commission members are
encouraged to volunteer a few hours at the Information
Booth during Sterlingfest, to answer questions for visitors
and pass out brochures & surveys.
· Giallombardo passed the schedule around for sign-up.
Please e-mail her your availability as soon as possible.
Giallombardo will e-mail information and updates as
Sterlingfest approaches.
C. Adopt-a-Road Schedule
· Wawrzyniak said that he would like four commission
members at each clean-up. He added that the group
starts at 9:00 a.m. and meets at 17 Mile and Dodge
Park Roads, and will then meet for lunch afterward.
· Send Giallombardo the dates that you are available.
Below are the dates and who has signed up, as of
tonight’s meeting:
1. Sunday, June 2 – Netza
2. Saturday, July 13 – Mason, Wawrzyniak
3. Sunday, August 18 - Netza
4. Saturday, September 28 – Early, Mason, Wawrzyniak
· Forward any changes to Giallombardo.
Old Business:
· Wawrzyniak stated that he spoke with Eric Czarnik,
reporter for the Sentry, and gave him the information
on the Plant Exchange on May 11th. He added that
potted plants will be accepted, the event starts at
10:00 a.m.
· Wawrzyniak asked members to show up a little early
and be sure to promote the Beautification awards.
· Baczewski stated that plans are moving forward with
the BCSEM Luncheon that Sterling Heights will be hosting
on September 26th. She added that each city/township will
show a short video, Sheriff Hackel and Gerry Santoro have
been invited and will likely be the guest speakers and will talk
about the Clinton River Blue Water Initiative.
· Community Relations staff will work on invitations and
securing donations for centerpieces, door prizes, etc.
New Business:
· Guitar stated that Sterling Heights was recently in the news
re. Arbor Day and the 26 consecutive Tree City Awards. Guitar
added that DPW hasn’t received new trees yet, once they are
delivered, one will be planted on behalf of the Beautification
Commission. Giallombardo will notify commission members
via e-mail.
· Duncan stated that he attended the Beautification luncheon in
Chesterfield, and said that they recently received a Tree City
award for the first time. They stated that it was a lot of work
and quite an accomplishment.
· Francis noted that the trees on his street were recently trimmed
and said that the tree trimmers did an excellent job with trimming
and clean-up.
· There will be no meeting in June. Next meeting will be held
Tuesday, September 3rd, at 6:00 p.m.
