STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
Monday, March 3, 2014
Chairman Aaron Wawrzyniak called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Commissioner’s present:
Janis Adams, Steve Duncan, Jazmine Early, Gary Isom, Sharon Mason, Ruthann Schinzing,
Aaron Wawrzyniak and Ann Williams.
Commissioner’s absent:
Henrietta Baczewski and Darlene MacLeod.
Other present:
Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist
Steve Guitar, Community Relations Director
Approval of Minutes:
Motion to approve Beautification Commission meeting minutes from the January 6, 2014
meeting made by Schinzing.
Seconded by: Williams Ayes: all Nays: none
Agenda Items:
A. Snowman Contest Judging
Giallombardo stated that she received 32 entries for the contest.
Members voted to award Julia Ohman as the winner of this year’s contest.
Guitar suggested the $25.00 award be presented to the winner at City Council meeting on
April 1, 2014.
Members agreed that this was a nice idea.
Giallombardo suggested that the regular meeting scheduled for April 7, 2014 be re-
scheduled to April 1, at 6:30 prior to the city council meeting.
Members were in agreeement with this.
B. Memorial Day Participation
Wawrzyniak asked members if they would like to once again participate in the parade.
He stated that he usually drives a car and members are welcome to ride in the car or walk
the parade route.
Mason voluteered to carry the Beautification Commission banner down the route.
Members agreed to participate in the parade.
Wawrzyniak stated that he will try to secure a convertible and asked if Guitar could
contact Waste Management and see if they will be able to donate seed packets to pass
out.
Wawrzyniak reminded members to park at Heritage Junior High school and take the
shuttle to city hall.
C. What Makes Sterling Heights Beautiful?
Wawrzyniak stated that he would like the members to think about what makes Sterling
Heights beautiful to them.
Isom suggested that once everyone has thought of their response, SHTV could make a
public service announcement.
Early suggested that the commission could ask residents the same question, possibly
through the city’s website.
Guitar asked the group what they would do with the information.
Isom said it would get the commission some recognition and maybe something could be
sent to the media, summarizing people’s responses.
Guitar likes the idea and stated it’s a nice way to promote the city.
Wawrzyniak asked members to write their responses down and have them ready for the
April meeting.
Old Business:
Giallombardo reminded members that the Spring Pride & SHINE Day is set for Saturday,
May 3rd. Anyone wishing to volunteer should let her know. Williams said that she
would like to volunteer.
The annual Plant Exchange will be held on Saturday, May 10th, at the Nature Center
from 10:00 a.m. – noon.
