STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
Tuesday, May 6, 2014
Chairman Aaron Wawrzyniak called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
Commissioner’s present:
Janis Adams, Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Gary Isom, Sharon Mason, Ruthann
Schinzing, Aaron Wawrzyniak and Ann Williams.
Commissioner’s absent:
Jazmine Early and Darlene MacLeod
Other present:
Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist
Approval of Minutes:
Motion to approve Beautification Commission meeting minutes from the April 1, 2014
meeting made by Schinzing, upon addition of conversation regarding the children’s
garden at the library.
Seconded by: Williams Ayes: all Nays: none
Agenda Items:
A. What Makes Sterling Heights Beautiful?
Wawrzyniak asked if members gave further thought as to how to proceed
with the ‘what makes Sterling Heights beautiful’ initiative.
Wawrzynaik stated that he would like everyone’s thoughts incorporated
into the city’s website, on the Beautification page.
Giallombardo stated that she introduced the idea to the Community
Relations Department, and it was discussed among the employees.
Giallombardo said that due to staffing issues, there is no time to develop
the idea and it can be re-addressed in the fall. She added that the city will
be making upgrades to the city’s website, and said that incorporating the
project to the city’s website is a definite possibility.
Item will be tabled until September, 2014.
B. Seed Packets
Members volunteered to staple seed packets (donated by Waste
Management) to the beautification award nomination flyers, to be
distributed along the parade route. This took place during the remainder of
the meeting.
Old Business:
Giallombardo stated that the Spring Pride & SHINE Day was Saturday,
May 3rd. Williams participated as a volunteer and the event was a great
success. Over 40 volunteers worked together to assist 21 homeowners
with their outdoor maintenance chores.
The annual Plant Exchange will be held on Saturday, May 10th, at the
Nature Center from 10:00 a.m. – noon. Giallombardo shared the article
that was published in the Sentry.
Wawrzyniak stated that he will be driving his PT Cruiser in the parade, so
members
are welcome to ride along if they’d prefer not to walk.
Giallombardo reminded members of the Adopt-a-Road clean-up dates,
which are as follows:
o Saturday, June 7, 2014
o Saturday, July 12, 2014
o Saturday, August 16, 2014
o Saturday, September 27, 2014
Let Giallombardo know if you are available for June 7th, Wawrzyniak
would like at least four members to participate at each clean-up. Members
meet at 17 Mile & Dodge Park, and proceed south to Metro Parkway.
New Business:
Adams stated that she is working part-time at Eckert’s Greenhouse and
said that Randy Eckert told her that he would like to do more with the city
this year, in the way of donations, etc.
Giallombardo stated that the Sterlingfest will be held on July 24, 25 & 26.
Wawrzyniak stated that members are asked to volunteer at the Information
table, to distribute brochures and answer general questions for the
residents.
Giallombardo will distribute a sign-up sheet via e-mail.
At this time, Baczewski, Isom and Mason volunteered for various shifts.
