STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
Monday, May 2, 2016
Chairman Gary Isom called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Commissioner’s present:
Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Stephanie Guran, Gary Isom, Sharon Mason and
Ruthann Schinzing
Commissioner’s absent:
Janis Adams, Darlene MacLeod, Kate Tuttle-Sniecinski and Joyce Tye.
Other present:
Bridget Doyle, Community Relations Director
Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist
Approval of Minutes:
Motion to approve Minutes of the March 7, 2016 meeting by Baczewski; Seconded by:
Guran.
Ayes: all Nays: none
Agenda Items:
A. Snowman/Snow Sculpture Winner Presentation
Commission members presented two winners of the snowman/snow
sculpture contest with $25 gift cards to Target.
Giallombardo took photos and will post them on facebook.
B. Tree City USA - Dedication Planting May 17
Doyle stated that the location of the tree planting has not been finalized
yet, but will likely take place inside Dodge Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
May 17, prior to the City Council meeting. The presentation will be filmed
by SHTV and city council members will be invited to attend.
Giallombardo will forward final details via e-mail once they are finalized.
Doyle added that the purchase price of new trees will be discounted during
the month of May.
C. Outdoor Planting/Clean Up
Members walked over to the Children's Library located outside of the
Youth section of the library; weeded, pruned and prepared the flowers
beds for new planting.
Giallombardo stated that the library staff would be grateful if
Beautification members could plant flowers in the large planters in the
garden, and possibly maintain the garden on occasion throughout the
summer. Members agreed that this was a great idea. Giallombardo will
look into flower donations or available budget funds to purchase flowers.
Old Business:
Giallombardo stated that Plant Exchange will take place on Saturday, May
14, from 10 a.m. until noon. Members are encouraged to attend.
Isom stated that the commission will be participating in the parade, and he
will bring a supply of water.
Doyle said that the staging will take place inside Dodge Park, due to the
construction. The parade will head south on Dodge Park and end at Davis
Jr. High; members should park at Davis and take the shuttle to the park.
Doyle added that the theme of the parade is "Forget Me Not". Waste
Management will not be supplying seed packets this year, Community
Relations reached out to Rizzo but did not hear back.
