STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Monday, April 4, 2022 Chairperson Gary Isom called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. Commissioner’s present: Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Manny Gonzales, Sue Hobig, Gary Isom, Nancy Kijek, Lisa Lane, Linda Meida Commissioner’s absent: Sharon Mason, Matthew Smith, Patrick Rye, Joyce Tye Other present: Dawn Bondarek, Citizens Services Specialist Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve Minutes of the May 7, 2022 meeting by Duncan; Seconded by: Kijek Ayes: all Nays: none Agenda Items: A. Spring Projects • Our next meeting is May 2nd at the library children’s garden where we will plant flowers and milkweed. Hobig is going to go to Eckert’s with Bondarek that day to help pick everything out. The group will be meeting at the library between 5:00-6:00 p.m. to staple seed packets to our beautification awards flyer before we plant at the children’s garden. Lane suggested that the city makes a brochure with more information about what the commission is doing this year (awards, pledge info etc) instead of our normal flyer. Old Business: • Celebrate Spring hosted by Keep Michigan Beautiful and BCSEM is Wednesday, April 13th from 10-2:30 p.m. at the Gazebo Banquet Center in Warren. If you plan to go, please get a receipt so the city can reimburse you. • Bondarek reminded everyone that Arbor Day is Tuesday, April 19th at 6:00 p.m. This year’s Arbor Day is going to be combined with a ribbon cutting at the nature center for a monarch art sculpture as well as the mayors’ monarch pledge proclamation signature. We will have an oversized proclamation for him to sign. The city has proclaimed Friday, April 22nd, 2022 as “Mayors’ Monarch Pledge Day”. Please attend if you can. Isom will also be presenting the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge at the council meeting at 7:00 p.m. • Memorial Day parade is May 30th. If you plan to walk in the parade with the commission, please arrive by 9-9:30 a.m. We will walk and drive while handing out the seed packets. • Our annual Plant Exchange will take place on Saturday, May 14th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Nature Center. New Business: • Hobig will be giving a wildflower walk at the nature center on May 14th, the same day as the plant exchange. • Lane wanted to see about getting our commission meetings added to the magazine. Bondarek will ask Melanie Davis about that. • Hobig reached out to Bondarek to see if we could have information about the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in our magazine. Our plan is to put it in our fall magazine which comes out in August. • Lane stated that down the road we could make educational plant markers around the city.
