STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Monday, November 7, 2022 Chairperson Gary Isom called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Commissioner’s present: Henrietta Baczewski, Sheryl Burns, Steve Duncan, Manny Gonzales, Gary Isom, Nancy Kijek, Lisa Lane, Linda Meida, Patrick Rye, Matthew Smith Commissioner’s absent: Sue Hobig, Sharon Mason Other present: Dawn Bondarek, Citizens Services Specialist Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve Minutes of the September 7, 2022 meeting by Kijek; Seconded by: Gonzales Ayes: all Nays: none Agenda Items: A. 2022 Halloween Decoration Jurying • Bondarek displayed photos of residential homes that were decorated for the fall month and asked commission members to select their favorite in each of the three following categories: Best Horrific Decor, Best Happy Fall Decor and Best Spooky Decor. Members voted on the following and three winners were chosen. • Bondarek stated that she will send out congratulatory letters and home depot gift cards to the winners. The winner’s photos will also be posted on Facebook. Old Business: • Bondarek introduced our new member, Sheryl Burns. Isom gave her an overview of the commission and discussed all of the events that the commission sponsors and/or is involved in: volunteering at Sterlingfest, planting flowers at the children’s library garden, planting a tree for Arbor Day with council on City Campus, Beautification Awards and marching in the Memorial Day Parade. He also summarized all that we had done this year to complete the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. Burns introduced herself and stated that she has been a Sterling Heights resident for most of her life. She just completed her 40 volunteer hours to become a Master Gardener. • The commission discussed hosting a native plant sale in the upcoming year. Burns says that the East Michigan Native Plants, LLC is great to work with. The commission says that maybe we could hold the event at one of the Dodge Park Farmers Market this summer. There was also discussions of holding it in the fall. New Business: • Gonzales asked if we could use some of our money to get new Beautification polo’s. The group agreed that would be a great idea. • Isom suggested that we make our next monarch weigh station at Utica and Van Dyke as an initiative for the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in 2023. Lane added that we would need a water supply at that area. • Bondarek reminded everyone that Decembers meeting will be a dinner get together at a Sterling Heights restaurant. She will send the group a survey to vote on which restaurant. • Bondarek reminded everyone that during the month of December we will be holding our annual holiday decoration contest and if anyone has any nominations to please send her way. Adjournment: Motion to adjourn the Beautification Commission meeting made by Kijek; Seconded by Duncan at 6:44 p.m. Ayes: All Nays: None
