STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Monday, September 11, 2023 Chairperson Gary Isom called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Commissioner’s present: Sheryl Burns, Sue Hobig, Gary Isom, Nancy Kijek, Lisa Lane, Linda Media, Patrick Rye Commissioner’s absent: Henrietta Baczewski, Steve Duncan, Manny Gonzales, Matthew Smith Other present: Dawn Bondarek, Citizens Services Specialist Agenda Items: A. Approval of 2023/2024 Meeting Dates • Bondarek distributed the regular meeting dates. Motion to approve the 2023-2024 dates made by Kijek; Seconded by: Rye Ayes: all Nays: none B. 2022 Beautification Awards Jurying • Bondarek displayed photos of 32 homes, 4 multi-family properties, 5 businesses, 2 places of worship; and asked commission members to select their favorites in each of the categories. Members voted and the following properties were voted as Best of the Best: o Residential- 4466 18 ½ Mile Rd o Multi-family- Arden Courts Promedica Memory Care o Commercial– Ventimiglia Italian Foods o Place of Worship-S St Matthias Catholic Church New this year, members were asked to pick their top 3 residential properties and the two runners-up were: o 36239 Melbourne Dr o 34401 Amsterdam Dr • Bondarek stated that she will send out congratulatory letters to winners to attend the awards ceremony. Bondarek reminded members that the regular October meeting is cancelled. Members are invited to attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. for the beautification awards. There will be a reserved sign in the front row for the members to sit. Isom asked Bondarek to send him the script and he will be doing the presentation. Bondarek added that we will also be recognizing a “nice neighbor award” following the awards for a cul- de-sac that the surrounding neighbors landscape. Old Business: • Isom had reached out to Bondarek via email asking how we could partner with micro-forest that was proposed in the ARPA Action Plan. Bondarek reached out to DPW who said that project is on hold currently while other topics of interest for City Council are pursued. If the project continues DPW will loop us in. • The Commission will be hosting a Native Plant pop up sale at Fall Day at our Dodge Park Farmers Market on September 21 from 3-8pm put on by East Michigan Native Plants, LLC. Burns stated that they will bring 6 big racks filled with plants on both sides as well as some small trees. Burns, Lane and Hobig said they will be in attendance to help. Bondarek added that unfortunately because this event is part of the Farmers Market, the city is not allowed to “highlight” just one vendor at the market so we may not get as much marketing as we hoped for. • Isom stated that Sterlingfest this year was a success and well organized.
