Official minutes of the Thursday, May 2, 2013 regular meeting.

1. Call to Order

3. Approval of Agenda: MOTION by Susan Kattual,
SECONDED by Steve Naumovski. Approved 7-0
4. Approval of Minutes: MOTION by Sharron Allen,
SECONDED by Andrew Pulford. Approved 7-0
5. Communication from Citizens:
Ann Jerzowski was in attendance. Jerzowski attended the meetings in February and
March as a guest and has since submitted her application to be a member of the Ethnic
Community Committee; Jerzowski is expected to be appointed to the committee on the
June 18 City Council meeting.
6. Communications from the Sterling Heights Police Dept.
– Sgt. Jim Selewski
Selewski was not in attendance.
Pulford mentioned that Shelby Twp. police caught the crew that had been robbing
churches in the area.
Naumovski stated that he assisted a neighbor who was unable to locate his 20-year old
son. There was a language barrier between the neighbor and the Sterling Heights police
and Naumovski acted as a translator.
7. Agenda
A. 2013 Sterlingfest Participation & Schedule
Giallombardo stated that she has a sign-up sheet for participation in the Sterlingfest July
25, 26 & 27. It is important that all members attempt to contribute some time at the table
so that the booth is never unattended.
Cabase stated that members had no way of letting others know if they were unable to
make their shift during last year’s Sterlingfest.
Giallombardo will re-distribute an updated contact list for committee members. In the
event that a member is unable to make it for his/her shift, please call another member or
call Giallombardo so that other arrangements can be made.
Jerzowski asked if she would be able to volunteer even though she is not yet a member.
Giallombardo stated that yes, anyone is welcome to volunteer; it’s greatly appreciated.
The flag display will be at the table again, and members can pass out American flags.
Giallombardo will look into ordering flags from Sister Cities and try to create some type
of a display for Sterlingfest.
B. Establishment of Committee Member Terms of Office
Giallombardo stated that as discussed at the April meeting and per the Resolution
amending the committee’s Mission, Goals and Objective Statement, members will
randomly select temporary terms in order to conform to the other boards and
commissions within the city, all of which have term expiration dates.
Giallombardo added that all members temporarily resigned, and stated that members will
be reappointed at the June 18 City Council meeting. The new term will be effective July
1, 2013 and will end as determined by the results of of the blind draw (either a one-year,
two-year or three-year term).
The results of the blind draw are as follows
o Sharron Allen - one-year term
o Omie Brooks – two-year term
o Ike Cabase – one-year term
o Susan Kattula – two-year term
o Doug Najor – three-year term
o Steve Naumovski – three-year term
o Linda Preka – one-year term
o Andrew Pulford – two-year term
o Betty Rush – three-year term
o Iqbal Singh – two-year term
Giallombardo reminded members that after the first renewal of the temporary term, all
members will then serve three (3) year terms upon reappointment.
8. Receipt of Correspondence - None
9. Old Business:
In regards to the Memorial Day parade, Allen stated that she has heard from one group
that will be joining the committee along the parade route.
Giallombardo reminded committee members to bring one or two bags of candy.
Cabase offered to make a CD of mixed songs from different ethnicities to play along the
parade route. Cabase has not heard from any members so please let him know if you’d
like to add some music to his CD.
Pulford added that members could bring some music the morning of the parade and he
could load them onto his i-pod.
Giallombardo stated that the spring Pride & SHINE day is on May 18th. Please let her
know if you would like to volunteer.
