Sterling Heights Historical Commission November 10 , 2016 40433 Utica Road Sterling Heights, MI 48313 Minutes of Meeting I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m. by Mott. II. Roll Call Present: John Connor, Frank DiMaria, Meghan Mott, Ruthann Schinzing, Scott Townsend Absent: Douglas J. Harvey, Steve Pomaville Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon III. Approval of Agenda Motion was made by Connor to approve the agenda, seconded by Townsend. Motion carried. IV. Minutes of August 4, 2016 Minutes of the August 4, 2016 meeting were approved on a motion by DiMaria, supported by Connor. Motion carried. V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters forwarded to them via email. VI. Unfinished Business A. Names Project No one is currently working on this. B. Oral History Conversion Project No update. C. Wikipedia Page Turgeon will ask the Community Relations Department to review this page. Mott made an account and added the Upton House to museums in Macomb County. D. Historical Display in Library Townsend will do a display for January – June 2017. He will contact the person that did a model display at the Clinton Macomb Public Library and see if he would be willing to let us display it at the Sterling Heights Public Library. E. Clippings and Scrapbook Debbie Vercellone can provide instruction to anyone interested in assisting. We need volunteers. Tammy will ask around for a volunteer. F. City of Sterling Heights Book Debbie Vercellone is continuing to work on the book. The deadline to the publisher is June 2017. Turgeon will create a board for A Sterling Christmas indicating what types of pictures she still needs. G. Historical Marker Program No new applications. H. A Sterling Christmas Open House starts at 6pm and runs through 8:30pm on December 3rd. Please be here at 5:45pm. We may have up to four volunteers from Stevenson to help us. Information about the Community Tree should be put on the city’s Facebook page. I. City’s 50th Anniversary Planning meeting was held in September. The Commission should come to the next meeting with 5-10 ideas for bus stops for the history bus tour. Turgeon will get a map for the next meeting to develop a route. J. Traveling Trunk Mott revised the survey and Commission reviewed it. Mott will send it to local schools for the teachers to respond. K. Utica Sentinel Digitization Grant Turgeon applied for this grant along with the Utica Heritage Association to have the Utica Sentinel digitized from 1876 – 1910. Turgeon will inform the Commission if the project is selected as a finalist. VII. New Business A. Summer City Magazine Article Townsend will work on this, maybe a history of the local schools. Turgeon needs this by mid-February. B. CDBG Grant Application Turgeon applied to have the Upton House roof replaced, the porches and other wood replaced, and the house painted. The CDBG review will take place on December 5th. VIII. Communications from Citizens Malvin Kotewicz was a guest at the meeting. He attended so that he could view the house and find out about the Commission’s activities. IX. Adjourn A motion was made by Schinzing to adjourn, seconded by Townsend. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m. Next meeting: February 2, 2017 at 6 p.m.
