Sterling Heights Historical Commission April 8, 2021 6:00 p.m. Meeting held at the Upton House MINUTES I Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Turgeon. Mott took over running the meeting at 6:05 p.m. II Roll Call Present: Cynthia Appleton, Nicholas Cavalli , John Connor, Meghan Mott, Mark Schell, Bryan Wojciechowski, Tammy Turgeon, Karen Turk Excused: Douglas J. Harvey III Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the agenda was made by Cavalli, supported by Connor. Motion carried. IV Minutes of February 4, 2021 Motion to approve the minutes of February 4, 2021 was made by Appleton, supported by Cavalli. Motion carried. V Communications/Reports/Correspondence A. Report from Karen Turk, PT Local History/Archives Librarian Before Karen’s report, Turgeon asked all Commissioners to call or email Karen before coming to the museum if they want to meet with her since her schedule can change based on the needs of the Library. Tours are scheduled on Wednesdays and Commissioners should not visit on Wednesdays to avoid having extra people at the Museum. Garrett finished cataloging all 375 objects that are currently on display in the Upton House. Turk is working with the SH Police Department on getting them photographs and maps for their renovated building. Sound files have been recorded for the QR codes for the outside of the Upton House Museum. Turk investigated purchasing signs.  Turk is weeding newspaper clippings for scanning for staff use only to avoid copyright issues. Commission provided Turk with a list of items that need to be purchased over the next two years. Turk will get prices and purchase those items that will fit in the budget. Items include fixing the one display case, purchasing a new display case (unless another city department has one to donate), plastic tubs for the Christmas decorations, a printer/scanner for staff to use, a wood burning stove, two signs for the QR codes outside, a men’s dress outfit and mannequin, a woman’s dress outfit for Victorian Christmas program, and an update to the Past Perfect software. Turgeon will ask Facilities about sump pump alarm or flood sensor. VI Unfinished Business A. Historical Marker Program There have been no new applications. B. Sterling Heights History Traveling Box Mott will be creating a video to show the Traveling Box at the MCHA Annual Meeting on April 24th. C. Park and Canal Markers Turgeon will meet with Langlois about the sign. D. Cataloging Completed E. History is Happening Now program Karen will contact teacher that was having students create submissions. Turgeon will ask Langlois about display in the Community Center this summer. F. Online Trivia Program Three teams competed and all won prizes. The program went well, but thought that in person trivia works better. G. Upton House Tours Eight people attended the tours on the second Sunday in March. Two tours are scheduled for the April date. May 2nd will be the date for May tours with Bryan and John volunteering. H. Victorian Christmas Program Appleton has worked on the script. Seven people are needed. VII New Business A. City Bus Tour Program  Appleton will contact Bob from SHTV about working with us on this project. Mott and Wojciechowski volunteered for the speaking parts. Appleton indicated the week of June 14th would be good. B. Sterlingfest This year’s Sterlingfest will be Oktoberfest with concerts, food and beer. There will be no art fair or carnival. The Commission will talk about options for the Upton House on October 8th and 9th at the June meeting. C. MCHA Annual Meeting Meeting is being held virtually on April 24th. No Commissioners are available to attend this year. VIII Communications from Citizens Schell’s last meeting will be the June meeting as he has not asked to be reappointed. Mott praised his contributions to the commission, especially during the renovation. IX Adjourn Motion to adjourn was made by Connor at 7:35 p.m, supported by Schell. Motion carried.
