Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting November 17, 2014 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Don Schinzing at 5:35 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Susan Biolchini, June Hughes, Don Schinzing Members Absent: Dave Brown Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon, Library Director III. Approval of Agenda Hughes made a motion to approve the Agenda, seconded by Berthet. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Biolchini made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting on September 15, 2014, seconded by Hughes. Motion carried. The Board requested that the minutes be emailed to them as soon as they are completed. V. Communication from Citizens Biolchini asked about the future of the book club kits for use by the Good Reads book club. Turgeon will ask the PR & Programs Coordinator to purchase at least one of these kits from Friends’ Programming money. VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2014 / FY2015 Board reviewed statistics. The room usage is up compared to last fiscal year. Program attendance has also increased compared to last September and October. B. Monthly Issues – September and October 2014 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. Board commented on the Boogie, Woogie Kid concert and the large turnout. Attendance for his next performance this winter will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Board also commented positively on the Director meeting with staff to generate ideas on improvement of services. Board also commented on the Crafter’s Cooperative only being offered once a month and that there was feedback that maybe it could be offered weekly. Turgeon indicated that she would let Jason Groth know that the conference room could be an option. Board asked about the hiring of the new PT Librarian starting December 1st. She is a Librarian currently working at the Shelby Township Library. Turgeon will confirm with Denise Shepard the number of years that she has volunteered for the Friends of the Library. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for the Boogie, Woogie Kid program, Toddler Time, Gadget Guy, Ask the Lawyer, Photography Classes, Chef Fran, Cardboard Challenge, and the Spooky Halloween Magic Show. Special recognition was received for service provided by Sue Woodward, Brent Efing, Jessica Woodward, and Kristi Montreuil. Board reviewed complaints. Received complaints regarding service at Circulation desk, standing room only at Boogie, Woogie Kid (will change policy to first- come, first-serve), bench in lobby (will move back to original location after Thanksgiving), and Stevenson HS students parking in lot (does not seem to be an issue now). VII. Suburban Library Cooperative A. Freegal Subscription Digital music downloads will be available to our residents with a purchase by the Suburban Library Cooperative. The service starts December 1, 2014 with an event at the Clinton Macomb Public Library. SHL trustees were invited. Susan Biolchini is excited about being the SHL representative to the SLC Board. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Sales Bookstore sales will hopefully reach $50,000 this year. B. Friends 2015 Budget The Friends have budgeted $50,000 for programming, Overdrive, collections, and more for the 2015 calendar year. IX. Unfinished Business None X. New Business A. Programming Center Use Policy Revision It is being recommended to add a statement in the policy that Federal, State and County agencies do not require a residency status to use the room. Motion to approve the Programming Center Use Policy revision was made by Biolchini, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. B. Removal of Microsoft Office Applications Usage Policy This policy is outdated and items related to software are included in the existing Internet Use Policy. It is no longer needed. Motion to remove the Microsoft Office Applications Usage policy was made by Hughes, supported by Biolchini. Motion carried. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Biolchini to adjourn, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
